Writing Mentor

January 2017 • Madison, WI

What I liked

The internship itself - English 484 - is fine. I really liked the material and what I learned from working with the English 102 students over my time there so far.

What I wish was different

I really, really, REALLY wish that the staff of this internship - those in charge of the English 102 class would listen to constructive criticism about the class' structure. It is so chock full of useless, obsolete assignments as well as SO many pages that the students have to read over a seven week class. It is so ludicrous. And I wish the mandatory 7-hour-long meetings were not used anymore.

Advice

Take this job at your own peril. If you stay for longer than the semester-long internship - I can guarantee there will be massive headaches. The administrators of the class are such a pain and they do not listen to anything. Every semester without fail they add more to the class without really taking anything away which means the workload only gets more stressful for both you and the students you're working with. Honestly, I would not take this job. I hate it so much and as soon as I find a better job, I'm quitting.

Applied Mathematics Researcher

June - July 2017 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

I worked with many people from different educational and cultural backgrounds, and we shared a closeness like family.

What I wish was different

The work hours were absolutely insane and not healthy. A typical weekday: 9am-12pm (lunch 12pm-1pm), 1pm-4:30pm (break 4:30pm-6pm) 6pm-7pm (mandatory group dinner), 7pm-12am. REQUIRED work hours.

Advice

Talk to someone who's done it before to get an idea of how rigorous it is.

Student Researcher - Computer Architecture

July - September 2017 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

It was a great research opportunity and my advisor was very supportive. It was a good mix of external direction and allowing me to pursue the research independently wherever it led.

What I wish was different

It would have been fun to have other undergrad researched around, or to be in a generally more active community.

Advice

Meet with your advisor / supervisor often and make sure that you are on the same page. Even if your supervisor doesn't need it, make progress logs / reports, as they'll help you stay on track and remember what you've done when you make final reports.
