Certified Nurse Aide

June 2018 - September 2019 • Cooperstown, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the face-to-face interaction with the patients that I was helping. I also enjoyed being treated as an equal as a medical professional in a hospital setting.

What I wish was different

I worked 12 hour night shifts for three or more times a week. I wish I had the day shift for my personal health purposes and to have a better relationship with my patients.

Advice

Being an aide means that you are the help that not only the patients need, but what the nurses need. If you have time to help someone, you should. But if you are already busy, you should also know that as a team all of the nurses and aides that you work with can also help.

Laboratory Support Technician

June 2018 • Cooperstown, NY

What I liked

Working at Basset as a Lab Support Tech (phlebotomist) has helped prepare me for a future career in the medical field. I get to interact with patients all day long, improving my bedside manner. I'm also interact with nurses, doctors, and other medical staff which helps me better understand the inner workings of a hospital. Overall this job has been an amazing learning experience and an opportunity to better prepare myself as a future Physician Assistant.

What I wish was different

The only downside I can think of is the lab department has days where it's understaffed. This puts a strain on employees causing tension and stress in the work place. However, this is a common issue among any department at any hospital. I saw these days as an opportunity to push myself to provide the best possible care that I can and to work even harder for patients, despite circumstances not being ideal. After all, that's the reality of working in the medical field.

Advice

I would recommend this job to anyone interested in the medical field or trying to get direct patient care hours for medical school/PA-school. Working as a phlebotomist is a great learning experience and a skill that you can use and is needed at hospitals across the US.
