Blue Shield of California

About Blue Shield of California

Blue Shield of California’s mission is to ensure all Californians have access to high-quality health care at a sustainably affordable price. We are transforming health care in a way that truly serves our nonprofit mission by lowering costs, improving quality, and enhancing the member and physician experience.

Headquartered in Oakland, CA, we’re proud to service over 4.8 million members and employ more than 7,300 people. We're an independent member of the Blue Shield Association.

In 2015, we acquired Care1st Health Plan, now named Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan, a provider-founded managed care company based in Los Angeles County, to help us fulfill our mission of providing all Californians with access to high quality, sustainably affordable care.
As health care continues to evolve, we’re looking for people who are passionate about bringing meaningful change. We want you to help transform our industry and achieve our mission to ensure that Californians have access to high-quality health care at an affordable price.

Empowering Change for California
Our vision is to create a better California by giving back and offering support to all our communities. To make this a reality, we’ve implemented programs that tackle pressing issues, from youth mental health to health equity and beyond.

Our Corporate Citizenship Programs
BlueSky Youth Mental Health Initiative: Leading with equity, BlueSky provides resources for youth, families, and educators to promote emotional well-being for youth.

Environmental Sustainability: Our NextGen Sustainability goals are part of a larger effort to create a more sustainable healthcare system and achieve health equity within California.

Employee Volunteerism and Giving: Our mission-driven employee volunteerism and our culture of giving is evidenced in our people and our presence in the community.

Supporting Communities Where We Live and Work:
Blue Shield of California is committed to giving back to not only our members but also to the various communities we serve. We strive to take action toward what we stand for and believe in by doing what is right every day. Our commitment to a variety of philanthropic causes and efforts that are designed to help our members and employees thrive while enriching the communities where they live. It is through these efforts that we believe we’re able to make a difference and become a place where our employees feel like they’re also making an impact and able to do meaningful work each day.

Our 2% Pledge: We are the only major health plan to voluntarily cap our income at 2% of revenue, returning the difference to our customers and back to the communities we serve. Since establishing this pledge in 2004, Blue Shield has invested more than $817 million in California communities.

Blue Shield of California Foundation
Blue Shield of California Foundation supports lasting and equitable solutions to make California the healthiest state and end domestic violence. When we work together to remove the barriers to health and well-being, especially for Californians most affected, we can create a more just and equitable future.

The Foundation is funded entirely by contributions from Blue Shield of California, a mission-based, not-for-profit health plan founded by physicians in 1939.

Reviews

Corporate Law Intern

June 2021 - August 2021 Oakland, CA
“I enjoyed the multifaceted nature of the internship. I had the opportunity to work with various groups within the organization and network across teams. The internship program was also well thought out and organized, as we had the chance to gain leadership/management skills, meet with executives, and present a final presentation to fellow interns. ”

Creative Communications Intern (Video Specialist)

June 2019 - August 2019 San Francisco, CA
“1. Autonomy to create - I was given a lot of autonomy to create for the company within the branding guidelines. 2. Networking opportunities - I had the chance to meet and talk with approximately 70 + people during the 3 months I was at BSCA. People are extremely open to cold turkey emailing and helping out interns & people are extremely friendly in general. 3. Work-life balance - no one's in the office on Fridays. Working from home is not discouraged :-)”
