Advice

Find work for yourself to do, make your interests known. Chances are, you're expendable in a way, but that means you can work on things that want to work on, even if you have little experience. Ask questions. If you're an introvert, be a bother. Chances are it won't actually be bothersome.

Advice

Chase opportunities like this that make you stretch yourself, challenge yourself and your abilities, and don't let yourself be limited by life circumstances and position. We are much more capable than we think we are. We just have to choose to believe it and act.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I liked how the experience allowed me to learn more about math research, especially since I come from a background where my perception of research is biology/chemistry related.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more structure in the program. Our research advisor switched up meeting locations/times and the research question halfway through the summer.

Advice

Research isn't for everybody. It's something that you'll either really really enjoy or something that you dread. Regardless of how much you like it, you can always benefit from doing research in your field of study! The material covered in research go much farther than what is often taught in courses, especially since you can dive deeper into topics.

Research Programmer

June 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I wrote code for a Russian professor, so my hours were flexible and I worked from home about 95% of the time (the rest were in-person meetings). It was fun because I'm studying Computer Science and Russian at Pitt, so I got to mix the two together and get paid for it.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a little bit more background in data visualization beforehand, but I eventually figured it out. Finding a good work area and blocking out time is also something that took some adjustment.

Advice

Make the most of it, and suggest new ideas to your advisor. Maybe they'll be open-minded about it.

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to work at the university I attended. It gave me a lot of insight about the inner working of a campus that most students don't get to see.

What I wish was different

I worked full time, but I wish I had also spent some time dedicated to taking classes or perhaps volunteering.

Advice

Don't be afraid to spend time at a job not related to your major -- the experience can teach you lessons that you can use everywhere in life.
