Discovery Intern

What I liked

This was an amazing opportunity to explore two sides of accounting, audit and tax. Through this internship, I got to meet a lot of amazing professionals and work with many different teams. Ultimately, it helped me decide that the Tax side of accounting is the one for me.

What I wish was different

A third rotation with advisory would have been great to see if I liked that side of accounting, but with only eight weeks to divided between three service lines can be difficult.

Advice

Talk to as many professionals as possible! While the work itself is important, getting to know the people that you will be working with in the future is crucial. They have been through the same process and have a lot of knowledge to share.

What I liked

The flexibility to work remote and to continue my internship through my Fall semester was the what I liked most out of my internship with Deloitte. Additionally, we had the opportunity to explore Deloitte University for a few days, which was an amazing experience and truly enriching.

What I wish was different

The assignments given were administrative at times. I wish the job was more focused within my major of finance, but it was a rewarding experience nonetheless.

Advice

The brand recognition of Deloitte on my resume has helped me in the job applying/interviewing process! Deloitte has been an amazing place to work, learn, and network with professionals in the industry.

What I liked

I loved being involved in projects with big clients (we would go out of town/to different parts of town to meet clients and discuss their projects) because you learn so much.

What I wish was different

I didn't like the environment that I worked at -- I was assigned to the I&CP (Infrastructure and Capital Project) division of financial advisory and I felt that I was looked down upon because I go to university in the U.S. There were some instances of several of my colleagues being rude to me.

Advice

Always ask for something to do because tasks don't come to you if you just wait.

What I liked

I enjoyed the networking events and professional development opportunities provided by the firm, especially at Deloitte University. My engagement team was very supportive and I was always made to feel valuable, instead of "just another intern". I was not only involved in meaningful projects but also presented to and was in direct contact with the client. Whenever I was in the office, I enjoyed going across the office and learning from others, including those who are from different market offerings. They are usually flexible and willing to share new ideas, experiences, and information with you.

During your internship, always go above and beyond – don’t just be average because this impacts your reputation and performance record in the firm.

What I liked

The project/client I worked with provided me many opportunities to gain technical and project management skills. The people I worked with were incredibly collaborative and supportive!

What I wish was different

I wish we had a bit more choice/say in terms of which clients/what projects we get to work with, rather than being assigned to one.

Advice

If any student is interested in exploring Advisory, I would highly recommend it, but also caution that they network ahead of time to get pulled on interesting projects.

Network with different people at different levels (consultants to partners) to see what a typical day-to-day looks like for them and to learn more about the different types of work Deloitte does.
