Fidelity Investments

Risk Management Intern

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I really liked how generous everyone was with their time. All employees were so willing to have a chat with you and to answer any questions you have. I also like how the firm focuses on learning and lifelong education. There were many opportunities to attend various events all across the firm to learn about what different business units do, acquire new technical skills, learn about investing, learn about the corporate culture and to learn about new initiatives the firm is taking on. I also enjoyed that my work was project based, solved actual problems for the firm and made me feel like what I was working on mattered.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different is that this experience could have occurred in person. However, due to the pandemic, it had to be remote. My internship was amazing remote, I can only imagine how great it would have been in person.

Advice

Be inquisitive and do not be afraid to ask questions. Also, use this time to build your network and reach out to people who work in roles that interest you. Everyone is very welcoming and willing to talk to interns and lower level employees.

User Experience Designer Intern

June - August 2019 • Jersey City, NJ

What I liked

I really loved how friendly and helpful the environment was. Every associate in the UX Department would say hello to you and have a conversation with you. They were always willing to help you if you needed it, you just needed to ask. Overall, this internship was able to give me great hands-on experience with how UX works in a corporate environment.

What I wish was different

My commute was about 2 hours, so I would only wish that it wasn't so long.

Advice

Don't be afraid of asking questions! When you're an intern, you're there to learn as much as you can in the time you have with people working in the industry. You're not supposed to know everything so don't be afraid to ask for clarification on something. There are no "stupid" questions.

What I wish was different

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Merrimack, NH

What I liked

I was paired with another intern who had similar knowledge as myself, so we were able to help each other learn as we completed our projects. I was also placed into an area that matched my experience and resume very well that led to me experiencing an actual Full Stack position.

What I wish was different

I wish that it hadn't turned into a Virtual experience as I was initially supposed to be working in the office with my team.

Advice

Don't be afraid to apply to postings that don't perfectly fit your resume. Fidelity provided many learning tools allowing me to learn languages and frameworks that I needed for my projects.

Marketing and Communications Intern

May - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Interning at Fidelity was a great chance to learn about financial services from one of the top companies in the industry. The work culture is amazing and there's a strong push to become a more modern thinking company, despite its history as a traditional, family run business. They also place a huge emphasis on female executives which is awesome. Working as an intern was also fun and social, because you are placed in an intern group where you attend a lot of group meetings and career workshops together.

What I wish was different

Being such a large company, it was overwhelming at times to understand where your group fits in the organizational scheme. Even after 12 weeks I still don't 100% understand exactly how each segment of the company works.

Advice

Keep an open mind. I was really surprised by how young and innovative Fidelity felt.

Business Strategy and Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • Merrimack, NH

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to learn about the firm every day. My mentor and manager opened up the company's resources to me and allowed me to set up meetings with whomever I chose. There were countless chances for me to showcase my hard and soft skills like communication, presentation, programming, teamwork, mathematics, critical analysis, economic analysis, and more.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship were longer! I felt like just as I understood the intrinsic goals of Fidelity my internship ended.

Advice

Being open minded is more than accepting any job or task your manager offers you. It means be open to talking to new people, putting yourself out there and grabbing people's attention in a professional manner. Don't be afraid to think differently, or be uncomfortable because ultimately that discomfort translates into unique experience that you'll forever be grateful for.

Business Strategy and Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • Jersey City, NJ

What I liked

Fidelity had a very structured internship program, and during my time there, I was valued as a regular employee. Our internship program allowed me to interact with other interns regularly, and we also collaborated on an intern project that we presented to Senior Leaders. I also had a phenomenal manager during my time at Fidelity that was crucial to helping me secure a full-time role after I graduate. My manager, Jackie Silva, had always assured me that what I did was valuable and appreciated, and regularly praised me for my work.

What I wish was different

Risk Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Merrimack, NH

What I liked

Aside from my individual and team responsibilities and projects, there was lots of interesting programming for all interns, my favorite being the money management workshop. There were so many opportunities to learn about areas of the company other than your own, which was great. It was clear to me that my team and the company as a whole really cared about my experience. They trusted me with important projects, while ensuring I wasn't overwhelmed and had all the tools I needed to be successful. Overall, this summer internship was a great experience that I would definitely recommend.

What I wish was different

I honestly can't think of anything that I would change. The pay was great, I was allowed to be flexible with my schedule as long as I hit 40 hours each week, and I was allowed to work from home. There is not much more I could have asked for. I will say that I would have liked more communication during the application process; I applied and submitted my video interview at the beginning of October and did not hear anything further until the start of February.

Advice

Take advantage of all of the opportunities that you have for the duration of your internship. I know my company had a lot of online training that interns had access to for the summer, as well as free access to the gym at the office, a perk that full-time associates do not even have. Network with others in the company and learn as much as you can while you're there!

Marketing Intern

What I liked

The corporate culture is fantastic; a collaborative environment that acts as a hub for new trends and information in the financial industry and marketing sphere. With days dedicated to learning and immersing myself in the day to day of my managers while also contributing to ongoing projects and my own self-guided project, I was able to connect with many individuals and layers to the company.

What I wish was different

I wish this was something that could be connected to RWU. However, this position is usually found within your own personal network

Advice

Absorb all the information you can and be open to new experiences.

Credit Risk Analyst

June - August 2019 • Jersey City, NJ

What I liked

Great group that I worked in, and learned a ton. We had a week in Boston for training with a chance to shadow different groups and people, along with the opportunity to sit in on meetings. Throughout the summer, I got to see all the functions that exist within Fidelity and hear from everybody in senior management.

What I wish was different

I wish that maybe the commute was less difficult, but really no other wishes about the internship itself. Great experience.

Advice

One piece of advice is to reach out to everyone that you can so you can make the most out of it and learn the most from functions of the business other than the one I worked in every day. I was treated like any other employee after training which was a great simulation of real work.
