Lead Instructor

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It's a bit of a unique experience when teaching students how to code. It allows you to look at code in different ways than you normally would. It was also nice to gain some management experience as the lead instructor. The regional managers are also phenomenal and do their best to make sure every employee is having a good time.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately there were a few issues with some staff but this is extremely unusual for this company and it was resolved very well by my manager.

Advice

Make sure you are prepared to work for the entire summer. When working with children and teens it can be easy to get worn out after a while so it's important to make sure you are mentally prepared to handle it.

What I liked

I enjoyed working with my coworkers and having the chance to educate and mentor kids. It was a great experience that helped me mature and learn some new things.

What I wish was different

I wish the training had been more concrete and that the pay for time was more accurate to the amount put in. $525 per week with between 40-50 hours each week is low considering how advanced this camp is meant to be and the expenses for those partaking in it.

Advice

If you don't like children, don't work this job. I happen to enjoy working with younger kids so I had no problems, but there were some people who definitely did not want to be there. You have to be passionate about the work to really make it through. Having fun with it and forming friendships with your coworkers will definitely go a long way.

June - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed my coworkers and the lighthearted, nerdy atmosphere.

What I wish was different

Working as an overnight instructor every week camp ran at the location burned me out fast; it's 13 hours a day twice a week and you work six days a week. We were also constantly understaffed and so overnight staff took only one 1/2 hour break a day.

Advice

Do this if you live close to a camp and thus have an option of commuting or overnight.

What I liked

Loved the kids the most. There is a unique sense of fulfillment having imparted knowledge into children. They’re so appreciative and eager. The regional training too was nice.

What I wish was different

I honestly wish there were a during the school year program for long term support of students.

Advice

Teaching and managing children is it’s own skill set with its own learning curve. If you’re not interested in either this isn’t the job for you. I saw a lot of instructors that weren’t patient with their kids and they don’t last long.

Instructor

June - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

This position was perfect for computer science students who did not have an internship but wanted to do something in their field. I taught a vast span of topics that were interesting to me, and I learned a lot from the course curriculums and my fellow instructors. The work enviroment was very fun and it was a very rewarding experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that the pay would have been a little more for the amount of hours that the job required (45-50 hours a week), but overall the job wasn't draining or boring.

Advice

If you are offered a position and you wish to work in western Washington, request to work at the University of Washington Seattle campus, not the University of Washington Bothell campus. The UW Bothell campus is fine, but it is a lot smaller of a camp and they pay salary, not hourly. UW Seattle is higher pay and they are hourly, meaning you can get overtime.

What I liked

First things first - the team was great. Working at iD Tech immediately puts you in contact with people who share your passions, and you build a great peer group. Plus, your coworkers are great networking opportunities for after camp. Working with kids kept every day interesting, and brought quite a lot of hope for the future. These bright young minds made this job so rewarding, and brought plenty of heartwarming moments. Camp was a blast every day. iD Tech was great at caring for its employees, and would be adaptable to employee needs. I loved the classes I taught, too.

What I wish was different

There were a lot of extra hours that went into this job that went unaccounted for - debugging projects after hours, or cleaning up, or meetings - but going above and beyond was also my own choice. Of course, summer camp can always be hectic, so more structure to keep on base with my managers would have been helpful. Yes, the job can be stressful. It would have been nice to have an extra staff member (Technology Coordinator) to help around camp.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up and ask for what you need - the job can be a lot with business and chaos, but the regional managers are wonderful about making transfers, understanding if you need a week off, switching course schedules, everything. Our regional manager personally bought one coworker a fridge to supplement the already generous housing package because she needed to store her medicine in a dorm that otherwise had no refrigerator. These people care, and are generous in a wide variety of ways if not with the paycheck.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Better pay for the long and difficult hours worked.

Advice

When they say instructors are the foundation of th company, you really are. 90% of the work done at camp is completed by you.

Instructor

May - July 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I liked the staff and the resources. The job was also very rewarding because it involves passing your knowledge of STEM onto kids.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was better management on the corporate level, because the course that was written for my class was broken and had to be completely redone. The extra work I had done didn't get me more pay.

Advice

If you're debating whether or not to join iD, definitely do it because it's a very unique experience.
