Jaros, Baum & Bolles (JB&B)

Electrical Engineering Intern

June - July 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Good exposure to the engineering consulting industry especially with the type of work you do as an engineer. They give interns meaningful work that accurately reflects the employees day to day but in a smaller scale.

What I wish was different

More exposure to the clientele JB&B does business with to get a sense of how projects get created and how communication is kept not just with the client but also with the other firms (construction contractor, architect, etc.)

Advice

Definitely apply if you have an interest in construction, all the work is centered around editing designs and creating designs for certain building renovations or construction.

Graphic Design Intern

June - August 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed doing the work that I was assigned, especially the tasks that involved formatting in Adobe InDesign. It was fun to brainstorm using the company's branding guide; having a guide gave me a path to follow with my designs, which I appreciated.

What I wish was different

I would've liked to work more closely with the Marketing and Communications team; I found constantly emailing back and forth to be tedious.

Advice

I would advise future interns to have an open mind so that they can make the most out of this experience in terms of learning more about career choices and strengthening their skills.

Co-op Internship

June - December 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My team was willing to help me with any questions I have, whether the questions are really simple or I had to repeat to clarify my understanding.

What I wish was different

I wish the pc I had was better equipped. The pc I had was always slow and it took a lot of time to do tasks that should have taken a few minutes.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions as an intern.

Electrical Engineering Intern

June - August 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved that this internship exposed me to heart of consulting engineering and allowed me to develop my collaborative and communication skills. I also learned many technical skills about the electrical industry which will prove valuable to my future endeavors. I developed my knowledge of AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revu, and Window workspace in addition to my understanding of electrical engineering terminology and practices.

What I wish was different

I would have loved more opportunities to go on site visits, sit in on more meetings, work more with other departments, and have more discussions with the partners of the firm.

Advice

Ask many questions and it is okay to not know everything. This internship was all about learning and not about getting it right the first time.

Engineering Intern

August 2021 - January 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The company had a very strong employee network. I felt immediately welcomed and included in different social events as well as necessary meetings. Everyone was very helpful in patient as I got acclimated to the new software and company procedures.

What I wish was different

The majority of this internship was remote, which was sometimes at my election. However, I wish there had been more of a push for me to get onsite. Overall though I feel like I got a good understanding of the company despite working remotely.

Advice

I came into this experience having no AutoCAD experience and this caused a steep learning curve in my first few weeks. Would highly recommend familiarizing with the Autodesk programs prior to beginning at JB&B.
