Undergraduate Research Assistant

January 2019 • Kent, OH

What I liked

I love how much early experience I am getting with doing undergraduate research! Kent has so much to offer when it comes to Psychology majors! My research includes anxiety among pregnant African-American women. Being able to do research about others in your community is extremely benefiting, not just academically, but personally as well.

What I wish was different

I only wish I got involved sooner!

Advice

I would definitely encourage others to look for different things they are interested in as early as freshman year. I would also encourage them to utilize all of the resources that Kent state offers. Handshake is an amazing program that has a little something for everyone. No matter the major, no matter the interest, or if you are just looking for a part-time job, Kent has it.

Flashguide

May - July 2019 • Kent, OH

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work with 39 amazing students who shared similar goals. I also loved making connections with future students and opening up a world of possibilities for them at Kent State.

What I wish was different

I wish the team I was a part of had been more connected because our disconnect sometimes created a problem in the work environment.

Advice

Don’t worry if you can’t work/have a friendship with every single person on your team. There were two teams of 20 students so it was like being in a non-lecture college class. Typically, you aren’t friends with everyone in your class but it’s great to have those few people you really connect with!

Supervisor of Safety and Security

February 2016 - December 2019 • Kent, OH

What I liked

As an employee of the Kent State Office of Safety and Security, I really enjoyed being able to help the students on campus with anything they needed, such as lock outs of dorms, medical attention, campus escort services to/from any on campus location and many other things. Our Coordinator did an outstanding job at taking care of the staff to make sure we were as well equipped as possible to serve the students of Kent State.

What I wish was different

Nothing particularly. The hours were rough (8PM to 4AM), but nothing can be done about that.

Advice

Work for safety and security if you can. It is an amazing opportunity to help yourself grow as a professional and it provides many opportunities to give back to the campus.
