I learned a lot about the process of conducting research and the subject of hydrodynamics. Assisting with research as an undergraduate student is extremely beneficial. It is a way to not only learn about a new subject, but to also learn about engineering application.

Field Research Assistant

What I liked
I really liked being able to do work and collect data in a more hands-on fashion. I had done research before, but most of the work that I was doing was remote and through online databases. Being able to go out into the field and actually be at the site that we were studying was really fun and made it easier to connect with the project that I was working on.
What I wish was different
In terms of the actual experience, I do not wish that anything would have been different. I enjoyed everything about doing field research and my only wish was that I had more time over the summer to do so. I was in this position on top of working two other jobs, so there were some times when I couldn't fully dedicate myself to the project (which is why I decided to work as a volunteer research assistant instead of taking on another official position.
Advice
From this experience and in general I think that being able to try new things and put
relevant issues into perspective is super important when it comes to discovering what you are interested in (or not interested in!). Even if you aren't sure about whether you really want to do something, at least try it once, because you never know where that experience will lead you.
