I enjoyed meeting lots of new faces all summer long.
What I wish was different
Wish I had more technical responsibilities, but it was not the nature of the job.
Advice
On campus jobs are a great way to feel more involved in the Temple Community.

What I liked
I loved the atmosphere of the center. The kids were excited to learn about science and have fun/engaging lessons.
What I wish was different
I wish my team and I had better access to resources throughout the summer. As an example, we had limited use of ice because of the ice machine in the building, so our ice cream lesson was very limited.
Advice
Do your part and hold the rest of your team accountable.

What I liked
I worked in the Balciunas Lab. I really loved the feeling that I got from being the first person to find out something new! I am working with genes involved with heart regeneration in zebrafish, and trying to unveil the pathways that the proteins produced by those genes follow in order to help the zebrafish develop and proliferate cardiomyocytes. I loved getting to work in the lab over the summer more so than during the school year because I could devote all day every day to the lab.
What I wish was different
I wish that I would have gotten involved in the lab sooner.
Advice
Joining into a lab is a lot of work, a learning curve, and emotionally degrades you while you are still learning. I would advise anyone wanting to join a research lab, if it is their first time, that they start over the summer. I am just now starting to get results that I can use for future work and publishing in papers, which is after three months of spending 8+ hours in the lab every day. If you are thinking about joining a lab, do it!
