Travelers

TDS intern

June - August 2020 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

There team I was on and the people I interacted with were so kind and helpful - it was a really safe, fun environment.

What I wish was different

I had to do everything at home because of COVID-19, so there were a few missed opportunities but my team did their best to make up for it (which I think they totally did!)

Advice

Just apply! I totally didn’t think I’d be able to do the things I did, but with my mentor and some confidence, I learned and did so much!

Actuarial Leadership Development Program Intern

June - August 2020 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed the connections I made with the actuarial community despite the virtual nature of the experience. I was impressed with Travelers' quick transition to a virtual internship which still maintained the highest level of quality. I built my excel skills through working on real projects, was involved on my team's meetings, and presented my work. I loved the opportunity to explore the actuarial career, build relationships, and learn more about actuarial concepts.

What I wish was different

I would have enjoyed further opportunities to connect with fellow interns. It was challenging to find ways to connect virtually beyond the typical events.

Advice

I would highly recommend this experience for anyone considering an actuarial career! It was an excellent way to learn more about the topics and apply my analytics skills, while becoming a part of a welcoming community.

Insurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

I loved how interactive and applicable the internship was. I was able to meet agents and insureds face-to-face and see how business was conducted on a day to day basis. The work that I did during the summer was actually used by the account executives so I got to actually do work that was helpful to the organization. Finally, I was able to increase my confidence and expand my network.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been longer so I could have more time with the company.

Advice

Travelers is an amazing company that I am proud to work for. Any opportunity to work with or intern for Travelers should be taken.

Technology Intern

June - August 2019 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

Travelers is a welcoming, diverse workplace. I was adequately challenged as an intern, with work that extended on my abilities while introducing me to new concepts and techniques.

What I wish was different

This internship is more IS/IT focused than development focused. I wish I would have had more programming-related work.

Advice

Ask questions, ask questions, ask questions! The only way you’ll be able to solve problems and find new opportunities at such a large company is to be proactive.

Actuarial Intern

June - August 2019 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

They gave me a valuable project that would actually be beneficial to the company moving forward. My business acumen greatly improved throughout the summer, and I honed my technical, communication, and public speaking skills. They also had plenty of fun/social activities planned for us, not to mention free intern housing. Additionally, they had a mentorship program within their leadership development program.

What I wish was different

I would've liked to have been in a different location, but their only location options for actuarial interns are in St. Paul and Hartford.

Advice

This goes for any internship, but I would recommend asking tons of questions and building your network as much as you can. Travelers provided plenty of networking opportunities (including with senior leaders), and interns should definitely take advantage of them.

HRLDP Intern

June - August 2019 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

The people were great and I felt like the work I did was valued. Networking opportunities allowed me to better understand all four organizations (Claim, Business Insurance, Personal Insurance, and Bond). The HRLDP community is small and there are plenty of build-in events (lunches with senior leaders, HRLDP alumni, current participants, Travelers Tournament trip, paint night, minor league baseball game, etc.).

What I wish was different

More work in the beginning after onboarding and mandatory trainings.

Advice

I'd encourage an intern to try to understand all parts of the business and meet with people who work outside of HR. How does Travelers make money? How does the claim process work? At the very least, understand what your immediate clients (employees) do to be the best HR business partner.

Underwriting Intern

June - August 2018 • Independence, OH

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to complete case studies and shadow different units. Travelers really made it possible to explore the realm of insurance in its entirety. The pay was very nice and everyone in the office was more than willing to answer questions and take interns along with them throughout the day..

What I wish was different

I would have liked to go out of the office more to experience the relationship part of the job with agents. In the past, I know they had intern swaps with local agents but I did not have this opportunity.

Advice

Take notes and do not be afraid to ask questions from the start. If you aren’t familiar with insurance, you will have many questions and it’s easiest just to ask them in the beginning so you can build off of your knowledge and learn more quickly.

Claim Inten

What I liked

Wonderful company culture. Very hands-on and meaningful work. The structure of the program included many all-intern events and information sessions about other areas of the company. Endless opportunities to network and connect with other business units. The all-intern project was very fun. There was a good amount of availability within the work week. The trip to Hartford, Connecticut was very valuable.

What I wish was different

Parking or housing stipend.

Advice

Take advantage of opportunities to network and explore your own interests within the company. Travelers puts much effort into providing meaningful work and is very interested in intern feedback.
