William Madison Randall Library supports the mission of the University by providing information resources and learner-centered services and by cultivating a rich physical and virtual environment dedicated to the open exchange of ideas and an information-literate community. The job descriptions of Student Assistants working in the University Library encompass a wide range of opportunities such as: maintaining the library space, answering questions, data entry, , shelving books, , checking books in/out, maintaining book stacks, , scanning, processing, and/or describing library materials, and other special projects. Student Assistant positions allow students to learn more about the library system while gaining a hands-on experience with the operations of libraries.

Potential Employing Departments

The departments below are the primary employing units for Student Assistants.

Library User Services

Students in the Library User Services department may work at one of our two main service points, the Circulation Desk or the Research Help Desk, ensuring a positive service experience for patrons or in Library Facilities maintaining and enhancing the library building.

Academic & Research Engagment

Aacademic & Research Engagement employs Student Assistants who answer questions and assist patrons. Student employees in this department receive extensive training in reference materials, both in print and online.

Scholarly Research Services

Scholarly Research Services provides a variety of opportunities for student assistants. The Digital Makerspace employs students who work with virtual and augmented reality, 3D printing and modeling, 3D scanning and digital media production. Our Digital Initiatives area employs students to work on digitization projects that involve scanning materials, working with descriptive metadata, and publishing the materials online as part of the library’s digital collections. Scholarly Communications employs students interested in academic publishing topics such as copyright, open access, institutional repositories, and the impact of research.

Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives & History

The Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History contains historical manuscripts, organizational records audiovisual, rare books, and other materials that have a special significance for the University and the Lower Cape Fear Region. Student Assistants in the Center work with Government Information, Special Collections, or University Archives and assist with preservation, digitization, and research services.

Resource Description & Management

The Resource Description & Management department manages the acquisition of library materials in all formats relevant to the learning, instructional, and research needs of the UNCW community, including books, media, and electronic resources. Student assistants employed in this area prepare new library materials for circulation and assist with deselection and other collection-related projects.

Information Technology & Digital Services

The Information Technology & Digital Services department provides technology support and application development for the library. Student assistants employed in this area troubleshoot technology, assist with website development or updating content.
