About UC Irvine - Calit2

The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology - known as Calit2 - is a two-campus multidisciplinary research institute. One of four UC Gray Davis Institutes for Science and Innovation, Calit2 divisions at UCI and UC San Diego leverage academic expertise with industry experience to conduct cutting-edge research in diverse fields. The goal: to develop innovative information technology-based products and services to benefit society and ignite economic development in the region and state.

Collaboration is the foundation upon which the institute and the building itself are constructed. The four-story, 120,000-square-foot building includes state-of-the-art labs and two floors of easily configurable open space assigned on a project-by-project basis to encourage new ideas and relationships.

More than 200 UCI faculty and students are actively engaged in environmental, transportation, emergency management, health care, education and entertainment-based projects. Some conduct research and work with students in the building, while others maintain home department locations but collaborate on institute research. Affiliates utilize funding, and administrative and student support opportunities – value-added services Calit2 brings to the campus and its partners.

Close ties with industry are an important component of Calit2’s unique research approach. These partnerships facilitate creative strategies to improve technology transfer, speeding downstream commercialization of research discoveries. More than 100 companies – large and small, public and privately held – have become Calit2 partners.
