Theatre Director

Gold Coast Arts Center is looking for a Theatre Director for our mainstage production! Our theatre program is thriving, and we are seeking a talented, enthusiastic person to head our musical theatre class. This is a unique opportunity to work in an art-centered and collaborative environment. 

 

Our SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS fosters education in the Visual and Performing Arts for students of all ages, experience levels, and skills. We provide a nurturing environment where students can feel free to explore their creativity and express their imagination. Here, they develop and apply their skills that they learn to create and develop unique work in art, dance, music, theatre, ceramics, and the complete menu of cultural arts. We are committed to creating a community of artists and art lovers who value and will always support the power of individual and cooperative learning not only within the classroom, but also in the world beyond our doors.

 

In our theatre program, students explore the world of theatre with our mainstage production, which typically rehearses from September – February (this could be flexible). The class meets once a week for about 90 minutes with some Sunday rehearsals. In our spring semester, we typically offer a Broadway Boot Camp, and in the summer, we hold a 2-week Musical Theatre Camp.

 

We have a Musical Director who will select the music with you, rehearse songs, act as a vocal coach, and collaborate on scenes and projections. We have a full lighting and sound system as well as a theatre that seats over 100 people.

 

Requirements: 

Candidates should

  • Have experience teaching theatre or creatively contributing to productions with elementary – high school students. 
  • Have knowledge of lighting and sound tech.
  • Be organized and work in a time-efficient manner. 

 

Responsibilities: 

PRIOR TO REHEARSAL PROCESS

Mainstage Production Prep:

  • Select a musical in coordination with the team
  • Rehearsal schedule
  • Input on set design
  • Input on costume design
  • Start choreography and blocking
  • Pick sides for auditions 
  • Pick audition songs in coordination with the Musical Director 

 

DURING REHEARSAL PROCESS

Mainstage Production:

  • Audition and cast the roles
  • Plan the set and organize scenery
  • Coach students to read and memorize lines with expression and conviction
  • Gather or purchase costumes and props
  • Finish all choreography and blocking
  • Supply content for the program
  • Establish lighting cues prior to tech

 

GENERAL: 

  • Communicate with parents and crew weekly via email with rehearsal/production updates and notes. During fall and spring semesters, these emails outline what was done at the previous week’s rehearsal and what students should focus on for the upcoming rehearsal. Emails should also include any costumes or props that students should bring, attachments of sound files, lyrics, etc.
  • Communicate with the Gold Coast School Director.

 

This position is part-time/independent contract during our Fall/Winter/Spring Semester.

Salary is compensatory with experience.
