Social Worker

The social worker in this position will be working out of Friends of Karen’s NYC office located at 8 West 126th Street; New York, NY 10027

 

TERRITORY INCLUDES:  New York City

 

REPORTS TO:  Director, Family Support Program

FRIENDS OF KAREN MISSION:

To provide emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with a life-threatening illness and their families in order to keep them strong, functioning and able to cope.

                               

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess impact of illness on family dynamics as a result of living with a child diagnosed with a life threatening illness.
  • Provide psychosocial and psychoeducational support to parents, siblings and ill child
  • Maintain ongoing home and hospital visits throughout treatment

  • Assess financial impact of illness on family finances

  • Monitor ongoing needs of family in order to increase or decrease financial support services as it relates to child’s illness

  • Advocate for additional services to address the impact of illness on family

  • Attend and assist with annual memorial ceremony
  • Maintain ongoing documentation for each family according to Friends of Karen Family Support guidelines.
  • Maintain ongoing Family Assessments for each family in order to measure outcomes of Family Support Program.
  • Collaborate with Friends of Karen art therapist and child life specialist in order to provide psychosocial and psychoeducational support to siblings and ill child
  • Attend monthly staff meetings at Friends of Karen’s North Salem office
  • Attend monthly SW meetings at Friends of Karen’s NYC office

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • LMSW/LCSW required. Will consider MSW who can be licensed within six month of employment

  • Bilingual preferred – English and Spanish

  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies and goals of Friends of Karen

  • Excellent Clinical Social Work skills and ethics

  • Good verbal and written skills

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member

  • Proficient in basic computer skills

  • Ability to travel to home and hospital visits using public or personal transportation
