The Future Ready Student: Connecting STEM First Generation Women to Industry

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

In collaboration with employers in the STEM field and campus partners, the Career Center is excited to offer the experiential learning opportunity to first-generation students including people who identify as women. This initiative supports students looking to gain hands-on experience and enhance their professionalism through a career-oriented internship, research, leadership experience, industry projects and series of professional development workshops. Students that take part in this program for both semesters will be eligible to receive 1 credit through enrollment in EXT 288/488.

DURATION:

Fall 2024 -Spring 2025 with added internships and/or industry projects from various employers/fields or other experiences in the Fall 2024, Spring/Summer 2025 semesters (the duration of an internship/experience is flexible and can take one, two or three terms).

PART 1: Professional Development

First-generation students can benefit from customized career planning and professional development while preparing to enter the workforce. Preparation through skill development and job experience can be fostered by joining The Future Ready Student: Connecting STEM First Generation Women to Industry Experiential Learning Program. Learning how to master your LinkedIn profile, market yourself or network in a professional setting can make you stand out as a candidate. Students will attend valuable professional development sessions through weekly workshops and will be connected to Stony Brook University faculty, staff and industry representatives throughout the program. 

 

PART 2: Industry Connections & Experience

Internships offer students the opportunity of gaining practical work experience in diverse settings, while allowing students to start building a professional network outside of school. The work experiences you acquire through internships, industry projects or research will follow you throughout your postgraduate career and will make you a competitive job applicant or may help you obtain a full time job offer upon completion of an internship. This program supports first-generation students looking to gain experience to complement their academic coursework. Industry projects will be implemented throughout the academic year.

Examples of ways you can connect to industry or build experience as a result of the program include:

  • Interning with an engineering or technology company (i.e. engineering, consulting, finance)
  • Volunteering or working in a research lab (i.e. research institute, higher education)
  • Working with industry projects with employers from various fields
  • Participating in an employer site visit to learn more about a company in the industry of your interest
  • Working part-time as a data manager with a large company (i.e. business, healthcare)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate first-generation* female college students including people who identify as women** matriculated in an undergraduate degree program at SBU
  • Minimum 2.6 GPA required
  • Students graduating between May 2025 – May 2028
  • Be willing to participate in an internship, industry project or other experiences in the Fall 2024, Spring, and/or Summer 2025 semesters
  • Strong interest in STEM (i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Research)
  • Commitment to participate in all workshops conducted in the fall/spring semester
  • Availability for program workshops that will be held on Fridays from 1:00-2:30pm.

Students will be selected through an application and interview process.

*First-generation students are defined as a student ‘whose parents highest earned credential was middle school/junior high school or high school.’
