Communications Internship 2025-2026
The Communications Internship through Stony Brook University’s Career Center includes researching, writing, and editing text for the Career Center’s website and other publications, as well as producing videos for online platforms, in association with staff. This internship provides valuable experience for students who are interested in careers in public relations, corporate communications, and writing and editing. The first semester is unpaid and the second semester is paid based on performance.
These internships are open to students of all majors and backgrounds. Each role offers hands-on experience and the chance to develop skills that are valuable across any field, making them a great opportunity for anyone looking to grow professionally and expand their career readiness.
Students must commit to this internship for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, earning 6 credits (3 per semester) to fulfill EXP+.
Responsibilities:
- Review and proofread external communications including emails, website content, and promotions material from professional and paraprofessional staff.
- Shoot and edit short videos and student profiles for the Career Center’s website, social media accounts, and events
- Develop content to promote Career Center initiatives and events for social media posts
- Collaborate with the Marketing team to develop specific projects and marketing plans when necessary
- Correspond and collaborate with alumni to produce article content about career experiences for students
- Work with employers to develop content spotlighting their companies and available positions
- Conduct interviews with students, alumni, faculty, staff, and employers to support content development
- Attend job fairs and assist with promotional content, headshots, and event coverage
Learning Outcomes:
- Develop skills in video editing tools including Adobe Premiere Pro and other digital video editing software
- Improve interviewing and writing skills while gaining an understanding of connections communications and marketing
- Increase knowledge of how to assess client needs to produce effective marketing and communications collateral
Qualifications:
- Sophomore, Junior, or Senior status by the start of the Fall 2025 semester
- Minimum of a 2.5 GPA **Note: To be considered for this internship, please ensure that your cumulative GPA is reflected on your resume.*
- Journalism major or a strong interest in Journalism and Communications
- Strong command of standard written English and knowledge in professional style of writing
- Experience with writing and editing preferred
- Working knowledge of iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and/or similar software
- Experience creating content for social media platforms (i.e., Instagram, LinkedIn)
- Availability to attend job fairs
- Ability to take criticism and willingness to take suggestions
- Flexibility and ability to manage time well and strive in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects on demand with a quick turnaround
- Must be able to work independently
- Demonstrate initiative and dedication

- Ability to use various social media platforms and social media management tools: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of job responsibilities

*Intern is required to be available from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM every Wednesday and an additional 10 hours per week when classes are in session.
