Peer Career Coach Internship 2025-2026
This internship through Stony Brook University's Career Center is a great opportunity for students who find fulfillment in the idea of helping others. Students will assist their peers in all aspects of the career development process from identifying potential career directions, to pursuing meaningful career-related experiences, and making successful transitions from college to the world of work or graduate school. Partaking in this internship allows students to assist in the career, academic, and personal development of not only their peers but also of themselves. The first semester is unpaid and the second semester is paid based on performance.
These internships are open to students of all majors and backgrounds. Each role offers hands-on experience and the chance to develop skills that are valuable across any field, making them a great opportunity for anyone looking to grow professionally and expand their career readiness.
Students must commit to this internship for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, earning 6 credits (3 per semester) to fulfill EXP+.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct intakes and peer-to-peer consultations with students
- Address drop in appointments, walk in questions, and communicate with students and alumni (in person, email, etc.)
- Identify needs and explain relevant services and resources available to students (Career Center website, Handshake, Career Communities, etc.)
- Encourage students to take appropriate next steps in their career development process.
- Refer students to individual coaching or relevant on-campus departments, as needed
- Co-lead career development presentations, workshops, and events
- Assist with projects (Career Development, Career Center Operations) and events as requested, including supporting job fairs throughout the academic year
- Work in teams with other interns and professional staff members to promote Career Center services and give students career-related guidance
- Staff Career Center tables at job fairs and other events to educate students, staff members, and employers about the services offered by the Career Center.
- Shadow Career Center professionals during resume reviews/career coaching appointments to prepare for individual peer-to-peer coaching
- Accurately identify issues needing professional staff intervention
- Meet with the supervisor on a regular basis
- Assist in the screening and hiring process of new interns
Learning Outcomes:
- Develop coaching and advising skills such as open-ended questioning, needs assessment, and reflective listening
- Become knowledgeable of career development and student development competencies and theoretical approaches
- Learn career preparation skills such as resume building and how to guide others through it.
- Learn how self-awareness and exploration impact career decision-making
- Develop professional communication and public speaking skills both in person and online
- Gain knowledge of Career Center programs, resources, and events.
- Understand how self-assessments can assist students in career exploration
Qualifications:
- Sophomore, Junior, or Senior status by Fall 2025 semester
- Minimum GPA – 2.5 ***Note: To be considered for this internship, please ensure that your cumulative GPA is reflected on your resume.***
- Basic Google Suite skills
- Superior verbal communication skills
- Personable, approachable, positive personality
- Interest in helping others and a sensitivity to student needs
- Flexibility, willingness to learn, and a strong work ethic

- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all aspects of job responsibilities

*Intern is required to be available from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM every Wednesday and an additional 10 hours per week when classes are in session.
