Student Leader

January 2019 • Mesa, AZ

What I wish was different

Communication between the four campuses is difficult and I wish for something that will allow this to get better.

Advice

Always ask for help when you don't know what to do. Its better to work with someone for a longer amount of time because you need to ask your supervisors questions rather than having a quick talk with someone and give out wrong information.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to interact with prospective high school students on a more personal level. As a tour guide, I'm used to communicating with students and parents on a regular basis, but I have time constraints in which I'm supposed to say very specific things. My job as a camp counselor removed those constraints and allowed me to share experiences and random tidbits of information to help these students decide where they want to end up in the next couple of years.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more time for the students to relax. From the moment the students woke up they were always on their feet. Whether it be walking, completing an activity, or even talking to professors, there was never a dull moment for them to sit and absorb all of the information and ask questions.

Advice

To roll with the punches. My camp followed a strict schedule and the students had to be at a certain place by a certain time. Many of the presenters were not as punctual as the schedule. Sometimes there were empty time slots in which I filled with random games and entertainment whilst other times I had to stop the presenter as they were running over. It was difficult at the beginning as I didn't want to seem rude, but I have a job to do and that's what I'll end up doing.
