A New Leaf

Marketing and Donor Relations Intern

May - August 2022 • Mesa, AZ

What I liked

Working at A New Leaf this past summer has been such an incredible experience. I was a little nervous going into this position because I only had a little experience in the marketing world but everyone, especially my supervisor, was so accommodating and made me feel like I fit right in! I was able to experience a vast array of projects that broaden my marketing skills from SEO/keywords, to branding designs utilizing Canva, to email marketing, and donor thank you videos!

Non-profit Marketing Intern

May - August 2022 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

A New Leaf has an incredibly dedicated network of individuals who are committed to best serving their clients, volunteers, and donors through community programs that actually aim to help individuals make a long-term recovery, get back on their feet, and secure a new start. No matter where they are on their journey, A New Leaf is ready to be a pillar of support, even for their interns and staff. I loved that I was able to get a window into this, and see how they are assisting so many people of diverse backgrounds across the Valley, and my work felt like it was actually accomplishing something in that process, especially since I was able to apply my major in unanticipated and creative ways.

What I wish was different

As I was working remotely, I wish I had an opportunity to come into the office and work in a more collaborative environment. This is no fault of the organization; my schedule at the time simply didn't allow for it and they were very accommodating.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out and get involved in projects across departments! If you're interested in how one department/aspect of the organization operates, find out how you can get involved in the learning process. They're more than willing to indulge you and will find opportunities best suited to your skill set to get you where you want to go.

What I liked

This was my first internship ever and it exceeded all of my expectations. My supervisor was willing to work with my schedule on hours, the work environment was great, and all of the coworkers were always there to support me in whichever way I needed most. The thing I loved the most was being able to have some independence on my projects, while still not feeling embarrassed for asking questions or clarifying certain aspects of my projects when needed. I worked on creating social media content for Power of Home and Home for Good programs, which are two programs A New Leaf has with local businesses and professionals in the community; Created templates for donor "thank you" letters with updated info for the Philanthropy team; And my biggest project was focused on developing the logistics and case statement to create a tour for their newest facility opening in the West Valley. Being able to put my own twist on these projects and learn from other professionals was very fun and added value to my experience here.

Advice

Ask questions and connect with the whole team. I talked to many different of the team members at the Philanthropy and Donation Center, even the ones I didn't have direct contact with, while I was here and they were able to give me great insight and advice on certain projects I worked on as well as my future career. By connecting with other colleagues, I was able to start on other projects that are important to me on a personal level. I even recently started a second internship here because I was connected with other colleagues that I knew I could learn from and continue to add value to my future career.

Digital Marketing & Donor Communications Intern

January - May 2022 • Mesa, AZ

What I liked

The first thing I want to mention is that my internship at A New Leaf has been a great experience for me. With this being my first internship in my career field of marketing, I had the opportunity to learn from Tanner, the Content & Communications Specialist at A New Leaf, and put into practice the concepts that I learned at Arizona State University. Some of the things I liked about the internship were the flexibility to work around your schedule, the autonomy to work on independent long-term projects, and the camaraderie among my coworkers at the Philanthropy department. My big project during my internship allowed me to construct an email marketing campaign where I filmed more than 400 personalized Thank You videos for recent donors at A New Leaf. It is such a great feeling to be apart of something in the community!

The Internship consisted of creating social media posts to creating promotional material for the different programs within the company. Aside form the workload, the friendly workers of the company will always have a positive aura around the workplace, staff that will help you with any troubles that may come up on the job, and occasional sweets that you can find in the kitchen area.
