Abiomed

Data Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Danvers, MA

What I liked

The people were amazing. Everyone was willing to help me with any problem I ran into, I was encouraged to broaden my skillset and make connection. I would consider everyone I met there a friend. The hours were very flexible and accommodating, which was very nice since I had a long commute.

Advice

Don't be afraid to talk to people, everyone is considered a part of the team and would love to help in any way they can.

Impella Design Co Op

January - June 2021 • Danvers, MA

What I liked

I loved the environment, I never felt uncomfortable asking for help or clarification and everyone I worked with was more than willing to both teach me about the work they were doing, and treat me like a peer

What I wish was different

Honestly, I just wish I could have stayed longer. Moving for a co op was challenging and being on my own was tough, but I felt like I had real support from the company and my mentor in particular.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to wander a little outside your geographical comfort zone. I never would have found this opportunity if I hadn’t taken the leap to look for positions near Boston instead of NYC

Equipment and Automation Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Danvers, MA

What I liked

It was my first experience working in industry, so I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to do that. I worked mainly with Solidworks and Excel, and was surprised at how quickly I became (at least somewhat) competent with both softwares. It also gave me some insight into what working at a company would be like, with a lot of on-the-job training happening during the first few months.

What I wish was different

By the time I was able to effectively get work done, it was time to leave! Not much me or them could have done about that; three months just isn't quite enough to really get working.

Advice

If you find yourself with nothing to do, ask around for extra tasks. I did this a few times, albeit less than I wish I had in hindsight, and I met some really cool people and worked on some awesome projects that I otherwise wouldn't have even known about.

What I wish was different

Advice

I cannot stress how important personal projects are. Even if they are never shown to another person, being able to talk from experience about what you made makes a huge difference.
