Hospital Volunteer

October 2021 • Portland, OR

What I liked

The program were built from volunteers who wanted to help out on their spare time and experience. The groups always varied from high school students to elders. It was a nice way of giving back to the community and get to know the people that had similar interests and goals.

What I wish was different

Though I enjoyed a lot of the things I do and help people here at the hospital, I wish we were able to do more things to build our experience. We mainly are delivering medication from within the floors and discharging patients. I would’ve like to do more to help give a better depth of the hospital and care there.

Advice

Working in the hospital was given me many more aspects from the patients and those who work within the facility. It’s a place where people become vulnerable and have worked from late night to early mornings. I helped me better understand and put myself in the shoe of those people at a place like the hospital.

Physical Therapist Assistant

September 2018 - June 2019 • Kailua, HI

What I liked

I liked how clean and professional the environment was. Everyone was fairly well trained and placed the patients before everything else.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to apprentice with a physician because that was my prospective career.

Advice

Never assume that you know what is best for the patient. Let the doctors make that decision, there could be many liability issues and legal issues if you happen to be wrong.

The dedication my team had for me and their willingness to push me to learn more.

What I wish was different

Health Scholar

June 2021 • Bakersfield, CA

What I liked

I liked how I was able to experience working alongside the hospital staff in different departments.

What I wish was different

I wish the communication would've been a tad bit better.

Advice

I would say if you're exploring the medical field and don't know exactly what you like, this would be a great place to explore because it puts you directly in the hospital and you can explore what speciality you might want to go into.
