AfterBuzz TV

Editorial Intern

September - December 2022 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I love getting to write for what I'm passionate about: entertainment news. As an avid movie and TV show watcher, as well as a follower for anything pop culture related, it was a perfect beginner spot for me as I prepare my career as an entertainment journalist.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more interaction between the interns. There are two weekly writer's meetings for pitches and chatting with that group of interns, but the overall group is really divided and there's not much opportunity to talk with all another about anything and everything. Having occasional meetups or some type of in person event to attend could help this situation and make us feel like a real work family.

Advice

If you're taking this internship alongside classes, find a good balance between work and free time. AfterBuzz / Better Together provides an organized, secure weekly schedule and they don't expect you to work outside those hours. But especially since this internship has been remote, it's important to take breaks and not feel so stuck in your bedroom or work space.

Virtual Intern

August 2020 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

As a fall 2020 virtual intern, I was able to write web articles on my favorite entertainment-related stories for the AfterBuzz website and contribute to the company's social media strategy. The weekly writer's meeting and "virtual office" on Zoom established a sense of community among interns and helped us feel connected even through the pandemic. My favorite part of the experience was seeing my ideas come to fruition and having the opportunity to work on graphics and articles for the "Better Together with Maria Menounos" podcast.

What I wish was different

Of course, if the coronavirus was not happening, I would have really enjoyed working in-person at the AfterBuzz TV studio and learning more about the hands-on/technical side of producing. If the company's After Shows were still happening, I would have also learned more about hosting and producing a live show.

Advice

I highly encourage future candidates learn/refine their skills on Canva, the graphic design platform used to create visual content. AfterBuzz TV and the Better Together w/ Maria podcast use it as a tool to create unique and consistent Instagram posts. I also recommend knowing how to use TikTok and determining what kinds of videos perform best on the AfterBuzz account.

Media Intern

May - August 2018 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I loved the entire experience. I could not imagine having a better first experience in the entertainment industry. It really got my foot in the door, gave me amazing life-long connections and I learned so much about the industry. Not only was the experience great career-wise but I also proved to myself I was able to live across the country from all of my family and friends on my own and make my own life and path for myself.

What I wish was different

I truly would not have changed a thing.

Advice

You get exactly what you give. If you go above and beyond you are going to experience opportunities and events that you would have never even imagined.
