Allegheny Health Network

Nursing Assistant

January - August 2021 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

Great experience while in nursing school! A lot of the nurses took me under their wing and taught me as I worked with them. The observation unit provided a lot of different patient scenarios.

What I wish was different

Advice

It is not always going to be fun. Do not let the job consume you and burn you out. Find something to enjoy every day.

Nurse Extern

June - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I absolutely loved the patients that I cared for and the nursing staff that I worked with. It was truly a life changing experience!

What I wish was different

I wish that West Penn was a little closer to home.

Advice

One piece of advice that I have from this experience is to never take a moment of life for granted. I worked in an oncology unit and it truthfully changed my outlook on everything. Those are the most sweet, innocent people and I am blessed to have been able to take care of them.

Nursing Aide

May 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I like the staff, they always wanted to teach me something and the overall atmosphere of the hospital was great

What I wish was different

I had to take a bunch of classes, which was helpful, however it was very lengthy on boarding process and Iwish that it could have been a bit quicker

Advice

If you are thinking of going into the medical field wether it be nursing or medical school, this is a great job to gain direct patient care experience and it might even help you to decide if you actually want to go into the medical field.

A volunteer

May - August 2018 • West Penn, PA

What I liked

I had good time with patients. Ensure the comfort and care of the patients during their Hospital stay, and keep them oriented was a great experience. I had a thirst for further learning and knowledge and I am so glad I did because at the end of this volunteering my accountability and positive approach were definitely increased.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to keep volunteering this fall, unfortunately I was not able to.

Advice

As a student, I think it’s always a great idea to take advantage of any opportunities about learning, weather is volunteering, internship or a job.

What I liked

The hours were flexible and worked with my school schedule. I gained a lot of hands on experience working with patients, and I got to learn about other health professions in the hospital.

Advice

Get hands on experience in the career you want to work in and use this as a learning and networking experience. Actually working in the field will show you what things you like about it and what things you do not like about it.

Financial Analyst Intern

May - August 2017 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

The atmosphere of the company and internship program. The internship was well coordinated with about 30 participants overall (and over 100 participants with the umbrella company, Highmark). There were various activities throughout the program; for example, touring several of the hospitals while meeting their CEOs. I worked with a team of about 15 employees. They treated me like another employee by giving me hands-on experience within the finance world. They were very patient in my learnings and included me in all aspects.

What I wish was different

Nothing within the program. I personally should have tried to coordinate a live surgery watch like some of the other participants planned.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Ask for feedback. Ask for more work. Ask for help. Ask for advice. Ask to get lunch. If you don't speak up for yourself then no one will know what you want.

Nurse Extern

June - August 2019 • Monroeville, PA

What I liked

I learned so much in my knowledge as a nurse and learned how to be more independent in my practice

What I wish was different

experience on other units i was interested in

Advice

Highly recommend doing a nurse externship if you are a nursing major. You grow in knowledge and in your autonomy immensely and I would not be as confident in my skills now if I wouldn’t have done it

Nurse Extern

May - August 2019 • Erie, PA

What I liked

I was able to shadow a nurse and complete nursing tasks that I never did in school. I like that I was able to work day shifts and night shifts and rotate to other units in the hospital.

What I wish was different

I wish the program lasted longer. It was so much fun and I learned so much, I didn't want it to end.

Advice

Be open-minded about your assignments and get the most out of the experiences you have.

What I liked

I absolutely loved the employees and the culture of the work environment. AHN's values align perfectly with my own and I will never forget them.
