Alliance for Justice

Outreach Intern

June - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Everyone in our department was very communicative and split responsibilities clearly. My fellow intern and I were given lots of responsibilities and had the ability to make tasks our own. The organization is also working at a really great intersection of government reform and policy advocacy, which made it a great learning experience.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be clear about the kinds of work you want to do - if you want to get experience doing political research, events management, outreach, ask for those specific tasks early on.

Program Coordinator

June 2017 - July 2018 • Oakland, CA

What I liked

Good nonprofit work experience (learned useful skills), good entry-level salary.

What I wish was different

Very small office, poor overhead administration, at times difficult colleagues

Advice

Location and office size matters! A small office is really hard, especially for your first job, and especially if you're moving to a new city.
