Full-Stack Software Engineer

April - September 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The projects and team were the best side of the job. Every one I worked with at AllianceBernstein was friendly, smart, helpful, and extremely competent in their job. The projects I was given gave me a sense that I was a valued member of the team, without overloading me with too much work and without letting me get too bored either. The projects I completed were fun, meaningful and impactful to the buisness which made me even more passionate about the work.

What I wish was different

Not much. The commute into and out of Manhattan was rough but other than that the job was a lot of fun without much to complain about.

Advice

The software engineer for enterprise solutions is much different than what we learn at school. Concepts like abstraction are incredibly important to master. My personal background in mathematics and algorithms came in useful a few times as well. Overall I would recommend familiarizing yourself with high level abstractions and try to learn how and when to use proper data structures. There can be a steep learning curve when joining a fast moving team, and having a strong software architecture background is extremely beneficial.

Equities Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved working with my manager and getting to know the other interns/associates in Equities. I also really enjoyed my project and found the work both interesting and challenging.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten a little more training on AB and Equities prior to starting my project, but I learned a lot while working with my manager and other associates, so it worked out well.

Advice

I wasn't sure how I would feel about a "finance internship" at first, but I went in with an open mind and found that many aspects of the job matched my strengths and interests. I ended up loving my time at AB and I am excited to go back!

Multi-Asset Solutions Inter; Technology and Operations Program Intern

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The flat structure allowed access to high level executives. Since it's a smaller bank, my projects seemed to hold weight. I was able to leave something tangible behind at the end of my tenure and learned alot in the process. As a sophomore, I was able to learn about where my talents fit and what role to pursue in a business setting.

What I wish was different

I wish I came in with more quantitative data analytic skills.

Advice

Ask questions early so you aren't stuck doing something you can't accomplish.
