Environmental Safety

May - July 2022 • Teterboro, NJ

What I liked

Fast role to learn. Lots of physical activity. Access to a branch of different fields to learn in spare time if thinking about changing roles and sectors

What I wish was different

That this was an established internship experience beforehand. There were a lot of hiccups and miscommunications.

Advice

Just because it says engineering majors are encouraged to apply doesn't mean you shouldn't look into the role or consider other options. This was a fake out in terms of expectations and work environment. I'd say Amazon is a predatory employer when they attach these labels to a role. This did not correspond to engineering in any way.

Area manager intern

June - August 2022 • Oxnard, CA

What I liked

I got to learn operations management from one of the biggest companies on earth. It was amazing to witness firsthand the process of fulfilling customer's orders.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been in San Diego as opposed to Oxnard

Advice

I think if anyone were to do this internship, it is important for them to understand the culture of the company. You have to be motivated and determined. Involve yourself and don't ask for permission (be a self-starter).

Fulfillment Associate

August 2021 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

Everything relies on technology and scanners, so employees are unlikely to make mistakes. Once you get the hang of it, everything is routine. Every week there are events for employees to win prizes, and sometimes they have little treats to give at the end of shifts. I also like the managers there! They are reasonable and friendly.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a way for employees to set a preference for a route. Some employees like staying consistent in one area in either the chiller, produce, or ambient, while others would rather rotate. Some days, I have rounds for the chiller my entire shift and my hands are freezing off. I wish I could have a round of chiller, then produce, then ambient, or somewhere in between so I have some time to warm up in-between chiller rounds. Also more ladders please-- we need to go searching between the aisles sometimes.

Advice

One overarching advice is to say hi and bye to the managers before and after your shifts; they are people too. They will remember you, and you will feel less nervous to come to them later if any issues arise. Bonus: Don't rush/run while doing rounds and put back the ladders when you are done with them, even if it is cumbersome.

Software Development Engineer Intern

May - August 2022 • Arlington, VA

What I liked

I really like my team. The people really added more value to the fun of the work and my time there at the company.

What I wish was different

I was remote because my team is located in a different state than my assigned location. Hence, I was not able to interact with them for the most part of my internship. The in-person aspect was really helpful when I got to meet them for 2 days.

Advice

Be proactive in your learning! Ask questions, and a lot of them. It is a way to connect with your managers, peers, colleagues, and see your own learning curve :) -- enjoy!

Area Manager Intern

June - August 2022 • Lakeland, FL

What I liked

The internship was structured very well. I got to start off by shadowing each department and then was placed in ICQA, where I got to learn in depth about the quality assurance processes in the warehouse.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to choose which department I was assigned to, so that I could have worked according to my expertise.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and try to shadow as many people as possible.

Software QA Automation Engineer Intern

May - August 2022 • Sunnyvale, CA

What I liked

I loved the technologies I learned and that I built web tools using React and Vue. It truly felt more like a developer job rather than QA.

What I wish was different

That my team was on-site instead of spread across the globe.

Advice

If you are stuck, reach out to people. Do not stay stuck -- I finished my project and got a return offer, but those who didn't were unable to receive one. Make sure to communicate clearly with your mentor and manager, and get them to help you reach people as well.
