Software Development Engineer Intern

What I liked

Worked in the Machine Learnings Apps, Inference team in Annapurna Labs. This AWS organization works on extremely interesting and difficult problems in the AI acceleration space. There are lots of opportunities to grow your ML knowledge and your engineering skills.

What I wish was different

My mentor was based in Cupertino, CA, while I was in Seattle. It would have been nice if my mentor was in the same office as me.

Advice

Do not get overwhelmed by sharp learning curves. They can be overcome, and you should enjoy the learning process, because it is never-ending. Try to meet lots of people and ask as many questions as possible. If people aren't getting annoyed of you, then you haven't asked enough questions yet.

Great team and good amount of meaningful work, made me feel very included and I learned the most I ever have anywhere.

I wish I put in more effort in teh first 3 weeks so that I could have clarified some critical things about my project. This would have saved me so much debugging time around the 9th week of the internship.

Don't be afraid of making mistakes and learn to communicate clearly with your team.

What I liked

I absolutely loved this internship experience! From the structure of the learning process to the leaders who made it possible, everything was so much more than I expected. It was both fun and challenging!

What I wish was different

I was a member of the 1st cohort group ever at AWS, so there were some kinks that needed to be ironed out, however, my cohort contributed our input and opinions about the internship and helped pave the way for a smoother road for future interns. I honestly wouldn't change a thing.

Advice

Prepare to be challenged! The material is very in-depth and quickly served, so make sure you are focused and willing to learn things at a fast pace. Engage yourself in the learning process as much as possible, be interactive, and don't be afraid to ask questions!

Importance of company in the sector as AWS is the market leader in cloud with a $65 billion+ run rate. Great exposure to tenured leaders who have decades of experience in the industry. Top of industry pay and full-time offer is competitive with investment banker market.

More time on client calls and shadowing reps to learn talk tracks,

Be willing to dive deep and ask lots of questions, cloud computing is a complicated industry, and it's important to learn as much as possible especially when in front of people who know the landscape so well.

What I liked

I liked being able to learn about the new technologies I needed for my project. With that I was constantly able to meet new people and learn more about the company. I also loved my team and how they supported me when blockers came up. Another thing I liked about my experience was the access I had to senior leadership. I regularly meet with leaders all around the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more shadowing opportunities. Getting a wide variety of the different types of experiences that I would face as a full time employee would be nice. I also wish there were more workshops going over the different responsibilities my positions has. Another thing I wish had been different was more opportunities to meet other interns outside of my org.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is look where you are incorporating the leadership principles into your work. The leadership principles guide the business and how it’s run. Every decision revolves around them. Finding where you can incorporate the principles will help you to learn more and simplify your work. They will also help you to become a strong leader.

AWS is full of people who are constantly pushing you to be your best, and want to see you succeed. Their mentorship program is great and AWS is overall a great place to be.

I would have loved to be in person but that was due to covid

Worked with the smartest people in the world, really like them also. Got to get hands on with code for one of the largest companies in the world.

I wish I had been more experienced going in and had developed a better work ethic prior to going in to the internship, though both of those things were resolved by experiencing the internship.

Work your hardest, the smartest person in the world can get fired for not working hard.

My team was amazing. Everyone wanted to see me succeed and wanted me to learn. I was doing real work that was going to be used by real customers. I learned a lot and definitely got a taste of what working at AWS would really be like.

It's a learning experience, so don't worry if you think you don't know much at the beginning. The amount of information intake is overwhelming at first, but you'll get there.

I would recommend working with AWS as a recruiter because its a great starting point where you will gain a lot of experience but it is also easier to network and transfer within once you are ready.

What I liked

I liked that I got my own project, and really felt responsible for my own progress and in control. It also never felt like what I was doing was useless or not going to be used, since it made sense in the context of what the team was doing. I also had a lot of exposure to very relevant technologies for industry, which was super helpful for interviews.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more of an in person component. Despite technically being hybrid and having the opportunity to go into the office, none of my team actually went into the office so i never met them in person, which made me feel pretty disconnected to both the team and the company as a whole.
