The Academy is a PHENOMENAL organization. I interned there during the spring semester of my junior year and learned tremendously. If you’re particularly interested in the Foreign Service (and even int’l relations and US foreign policy overall), you’ll enjoy the experience. You‘ll have a lot of networking opportunities with former US ambassadors and officials. Plus, you’ll often deal with the latest foreign policy developments, since the Academy’s mission revolves around global affairs. This certainly aligns with your academic studies and heightens your awareness of events around the world across various regions. At least for me, this internship kept me up to date with news concerning US nat’l security, while supplementing my courses at GW.
On a different note, it’s a smaller office setting, but I preferred that. Compared to larger companies, nonprofits, and government agencies, people at the Academy give you extraordinary flexibility to pursue your passions (as long as you complete the generic administrative tasks of course). For instance, I wanted to expand the Academy’s student outreach, so I proposed hosting a panel discussion of previous ambassadors on our campus. They encourage interns to take initiative like this.
