What I liked

I help women find the right bra for them. It sounds very basic and a little lame but it feels very rewarding when the women you help come up to you and thank you for finding them something that provides comfort and ease. In addition, my sales team has actually become a family to me.

Sales Accociate

March 2017 • Sunbury, OH

What I liked

The benefits of working retail are helpful. I was able to get most of my clothes for school paid for by American Eagle. They held contests for workers who sold the most items and such, so it was an incentive to work harder.

What I wish was different

The hours weren’t as consistent as I needed supporting myself as a college student

Advice

Go into it with an open mind and give the most hours of availability you can.

Cashier

May 2018 - September 2019 • Ontario, CA

What I liked

I liked how it helped me learn how to talk to people

What I wish was different

I wish I knew more languages to better communicate with more of my customers

Advice

Don’t take everything someone says or does personal, some people are looking for something to be mad at and they’ll take it out on you. Don’t feed into their energy, ask someone (preferably a manager) for backup once you feel uncomfortable.

Sales associate

July 2017 • Durham, NC

What I liked

I enjoyed interacting with other people of varying personalities. Whatever field a student decides to participate in, students will be interacting with a plethora of personalities.

What I wish was different

I wish I had done something more relatable to my actual career. I also wish I would’ve been seeking different internships to broaden my experience and to help introduce myself to the different occupations that exist.

Advice

It’s good to gain experiences such as these because they will prepare future employers for the social aspect of having a job.
