I was a part of a small team and had the freedom to drive my own work. My colleagues made an effort to include me on projects in which I indicated interest, and my manager met with me weekly to help guide me in the pursuit of my personal and professional goals. Overall the experience was great, the Madison facility is a beautiful property with plenty of space to change your scenery throughout the day. Everybody was willing to share their knowledge to help improve my experience with the company.
What I wish was different
I would have liked to interact with other interns more in my day-to-day work. But there are plenty of opportunities organized by the internship program director to meet other interns.
Advice
Don't hesitate to reach out to people in roles you're interested in for networking opportunities. Everyone is willing to share their experiences and help make your time with the company as valuable as possible.

Outreach and Partners Intern
May - August 2021 • Overland Park, KS
What I liked
I liked the people that I worked with.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had an in-person experience. Initially, it was going to be that way.
Advice
If working remotely, ask the best ways to communicate that you are completed with a task and need more work. It was a lot harder to take initiative.

Agency Sales Recruiter and Marketing Respresentative
June - December 2021 • Waukesha, WI
What I liked
They gave me a lot of independence and definitely wanted to see me succeed and would do whatever they could to help guide me to that success.
What I wish was different
I wish I had been able to work in person more often but it was a truly great experience to also learn what it's like to onboard and work remotely, which came in handy as the next role I accepted will also do work remotely.
Advice
It's an absolutely fabulous enterprise with so many opportunities and so much room for growth. I would advise any and all interns to take the time to make coffee chats with different people throughout the company. This helps you make friends, learn about the company, about the insurance industry, and about how much value networking can bring you.

Printer Support Technition
June - September 2019 • Madison, WI
What I liked
American Family Insurance wasn't just concerned about giving you an internship. They have each intern go through around 20 classes during there internship to help them with leadership, networking, life skills, company culture, resume building etc. They give you the opportunity to excel in many areas more than just technical skills to apply to your career.

Advice
If anyone is considering a Internship with AmFam I would highly recommend it and go to every single class you can. Some seem silly but you will always leave with something beneficial.

Human Resources Consulting Intern
June 2019 • Madison, WI
What I liked
I love that my day is always different. I never am doing the same mundane tasks over and over. I was exposed to real-life HR experiences, and I was challenged to think critically on topics such as: engagement, workforce planning, and implementing remote work within teams. They truly cater to my individual growth and professional development.
What I wish was different
I am very happy with my experiences, and I don't think they could've done something different.
Advice
I wish I would have had the confidence I do now, earlier on. It's okay to throw ideas out, even if you're not sure if they're correct. Similarly, ask questions right away!

Specialty Marketing Assistaint
May - August 2018 • Madison, WI
What I liked
Incredible team that dedicated much of their time and energy into my professional development. I gained a lot of confidence in my strengths as a marketer and am forever grateful for their interest in my personal growth.
What I wish was different
I was hired contractually at a later date, missing the official "internship" window. As such, I was unable to participate in any of the intern programming. I would recommend opening up intern learning opportunities to other workers in similar age groups to help all grow their network and participate in company events.
Advice
Do not be afraid to leverage the network of incredible talent at American Family Insurance. I met a lot of great people but definitely regret not taking the initiative to reach out beyond my direct team to learn about the experiences of others.
