American Fork City

City Parks employee

July - August 2019 • American Fork, UT

What I liked

It was a super chill job, a relaxing way to spend the summer but make some money.

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn't have had to clean such disgusting park bathrooms.

Advice

Anyone looking into working to clean parks needs to be willing to get a little dirty.

Civil Engineering Intern

April - October 2019 • American Fork, UT

What I liked

I enjoyed learning about how a city operates and how city infrastructure impacts the lives of residents everyday. I also enjoyed infrastructure design , estimation of projects, and working on developmental approvals.

What I wish was different

They city has recently gone through staffing changes. They seem rather scrambled trying to pick up the pieces that the past employees left. They're doing a fantastic job with everything they are doing however, I believe that if they were organized the way they plan it to be, it would have made my experience more direct.

Advice

Civil Engineers, be prepared to work with city officials. Anticipate a lot of interaction with the public in you career. This is not a career where minimal social skills are acceptable. One must be able to communicate both in writing and in speaking. Show that you care about your job through the action and words you share with the community as well as colleges.
