Administrative Assistant

June - August 2018 • Santa Ana, CA

What I liked

I got insight into how the American Red Cross functions on such a global scale. I was able to use different computer programs in order to update procedures and organize the volunteer database. While I was not physically assisting people suffering from disasters, I was able to work in the office to allow other responders to help.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to collaborate more with the other volunteers. A lot of my work was done between my administrative coordinator and myself, but I wish there was more group work with other volunteers.

Advice

You have to be willing to take on roles that might not seem like an exact fit for your interests. While I don't want to be working in a typical office as my career, I was able to gain invaluable experience and also appreciate the behind the scenes office work done for a major health organization.
