Ameriprise Financial

Finance intern

May - August 2020 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

Working for Ameriprise was a really great experience. They have some of the best trainings and professional development out there. I loved getting to network with so many different people from first time advisors to company executives. Ameriprise does a great job with their internship programs.

What I wish was different

This internship was completely virtual and I am so thankful for the opportunity to have even had an internship especially due to Covid-19. The only thing I wish that would have been different, would be to have the chance to be at the Minneapolis location. I wanted to meet my fellow interns and the other employees in-person, and experience corporate finance.

Advice

Do it. Find an internship, dive head first into the experience. Meet with recruiters via zoom or virtual career fairs. The experience you will learn is unparalleled to anything that's taught in a classroom, do it.

Financial Advisor Intern

May - July 2020 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to get hands-on experience within the financial services industry. This was most beneficial to me to get a better grasp of what I want to do post-graduation.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, it was different than expected due to the circumstance of COVID going on. I wasn't able to sit in on as many client meetings as I would of due to clients not coming in.

Advice

The one piece of advice I would give is to be open in whatever internship/ job you are at. This helps you get the best experience possible wherever you may be at.

Finance Intern

May - August 2020 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

Good company, solid program and I really learned a lot there!

What I wish was different

I wish we would have been there in person… But the coronavirus made that impossible

Advice

Reach out to people who are leaders in your department and in other departments. Sit down and ask them questions. Be willing to ask questions when you don’t know what you’re doing. Double or triple check your work before submitting, the less errors the better.

Finance Intern

June - September 2020 • Plymouth Meeting, PA

What I liked

It was a great learning experience for my first internship, and I was happy I was able to go into the office and work despite the COVID-19 restrictions. It was a small team so I was able to learn directly from the head of the team.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to interact more with clients, but the office was holding meetings via Skype due to COVID-19.

Advice

Always ask questions! No question is too small and its better to ask a question than assume you know how to do something and then do it incorrectly.

Wealth Management Intern

June 2020 • Del Mar, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed how my boss and the financial advisors were constantly allowing me to develop both personally and professionally! I got to takeaway various skills, from business acumen to Excel, which are both vital in the professional world. This internship gave me exposure into the financial services career, where I was able to create financial statements, investment and financial preps, and interact with clients!

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have worked more directly with the clients and their portfolios.

Advice

One piece of advice is to have a consistent schedule. I know from experience that internship work, academics and classes, and your personal life can be hard to juggle, but once you get into a consistent routine everyday, it becomes easier to manage your time.
