Amica Mutual Insurance Company

Senior Service Intern

May - August 2022 • Lincoln, RI

What I liked

They do a great job of teaching you principles and fundamentals of insurance which has helped me with my risk management classes. Additionally, they give you a lot of exposure and opportunity to network throughout the company with any department or job profession you wish. People are eager to talk to you and the advisors of the program are great. You also do a good bit of customer service and interact with insureds on a daily basis. It gives you great practice of how to professionally interact with others. They also give you two projects you work on with other interns.

What I wish was different

The first few weeks is training and can be boring and dull at sometimes. I wish it was a little more interesting or engaging. During this time your being trained how to use company systems and their insurance policies. It's important to know, but not super fun to learn. However, it soon becomes second nature.

Advice

Take advantage of the opportunities given. You get as much as you put in, and if there's more you want to know about a specific area let someone know and you can make it happen.

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2020 • Lincoln, RI

What I liked

I liked getting to learn a little bit about more than just the one sector I was working in. I got good exposure to other areas of the company as well as other divisions of actuarial that I was not assigned to, such as pricing and reserving.

What I wish was different

I wish that the program was slightly more structured to gain experience in more than one area. The projects that I worked on were repetitive in a sense, allowing me to deeply understand the projects I was involved in but lacked knowledge of other projects.

Advice

It was a great opportunity to have and understand more about what I enjoy within the field and would like to pursue in the future. The advice I would give having learned from this experience is to take any opportunity you are given because even if it is not something you want to do forever, you can learn a lot about your strengths and weaknesses and the kind of work that you enjoy doing.

Advice

I would advice others to work extra hard in a Corporate setting because you never know who's watching. Get along with everyone in the office and try extra hard to be liked and show interest in every task. Dare to be different but conform when necessary.

Data Research Assistant

May - August 2018 • Lincoln, RI

What I liked

It was an extremely diverse environment to work in with peers from all over the world. They were all extremely welcoming and aided in my assimilation into the company. It was also very new, and I was able to learn a lot in my short internship, especially with IT software.

What I wish was different

I appreciate the experience, I simply think it has shown me that IT is not what I want to pursue with the rest of my life.

Advice

Be prepared to work with people with differing experiences, educations, views, and backgrounds; being open to them will help you learn and work more efficiently.
