Data Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

I was able to take on projects that added value to the company and that were very challenging. I was given enough instruction to succeed, but I was responsible for learning technical skills on my own, which helped me in the long run. My colleagues were very helpful and fun to work with. The overall internship program was well-organized.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have started off smoother, with access to the right things and other logistics. Also, I wish there were more opportunities to get to know the other interns.

Advice

Some employers are willing to train someone if they see potential, even if they do not have the best academic performance. What matters most is the ability to get the job done, and to collaborate effectively in teams. Students should not be upset if they have a lower GPA. They should focus more on building a strong network of referrals, building an attractive resume, polishing their vocabulary and other communication skills, and enhancing their job interview skills.

What I liked

I loved the envrionment, sitting next to the window, and the Employee perks like a Frozen yogurt machine! I also just loved doing something applicable to my careeer for the first time and looking at maps all day!

What I wish was different

I was a contracted intern which meant I couldn't participate in the company fully or their offical intership program, I feel like I could have learned a lot from that.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help!

iOS Development Intern

May - August 2019 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

In my experience, interns were treated just like any other employee. For the most part, I never felt like "just the intern." I was able to play a meaningful role in building a new feature for the AncestryDNA mobile app. The headquarters is really nice, with free snacks and drinks provided. There is also a nice cafeteria with inexpensive meals and free frozen yogurt. I felt that I was able to work with many intelligent and capable individuals and I am very thankful for everything I learned this summer!

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to have more meaningful tasks to work on in the first few weeks. I wasn't always sure what to do with my time. But that was a short-lived worry. For the most part, I had a lot to do.

Advice

Just apply for an internship! It was seriously the best thing I could have imagined for my summer. I do highly recommend having some sort of personal project on your resume before your interview.
