Anthem Pest Control

Route Manager

May - August 2019 • Duluth, GA

What I liked

I really liked my team leader Joshua Garvin. He was supportive and hard working. He did a great job motivating the team to do our best. The other team members I worked with were like family to me, and I am still friends with many of them. This job will teach you valuable life skills- how to handle rejection, how to persuade people, how to handle uncomfortable situations, etc. This is door to door sales and you will learn your lessons through harsh trials.

What I wish was different

While my team leader was great the many of the other team leaders and general management were not. Their prime objective is to make money and they do not care too much about the sales reps. The office is disorganized and response times can be slow. There will be policies that make it so that people who only do "ok" are punished and only the top will make a substantial profit. You will not make very much money doing this job unless you do very well. The company will charge you a minimum of $3000 over the course of your paychecks to cover rent, your uniform, an iPad, and incentives. If you do well and exceed certain sales goals (ie. making 150 sales that do not cancel) some of these fees will be reimbursed. However, you will be paying for all your utilities, food, and gas. My team was typically assigned an area that was an hour's drive away so every day we spent 2 or more hours on the road. These expenses do start to add up and I was almost living paycheck to paycheck (they pay you twice a month). They will tell you that anyone can do door to door sales but what they don't tell you is that most people will not do it very well no matter how hard they try. I wish the company cared more about their sales reps because at the end of the day it's clear they really only care about the money. People who complain about their system will most likely be branded "weak-willed" or "lazy" but the truth is the job isn't for everyone.

Advice

Door to door sales will teach you many valuable skills that you'll be able to apply in all areas of your life. You'll meet some of the coolest people on the doors and make important connections. However, do not be fooled. This job is grueling, it will require an intense amount of skill and hard work. You will have to push yourself past the limit in order to even break even. You will meet some of the meanest and rudest people you have ever met. You will probably make very little money overall. But if you've really got what it takes and you don't care how much pain you have to go through. There is a very real possibility to succeed it's just nowhere near as easy as the company makes it seem.

What I liked

The work was relatively simple, I had a work truck and the company paid for gas.

What I wish was different

I was never paid on the day I was supposed to be, the boss of the company wasn’t honest in exposing the work contract. My coworkers didn’t know how to work effectively or respect the customers.

Advice

Read the contract before you sign it, summer sales companies are usually dishonest in their dealings with both employees and customers. Overall there are better jobs out there.
