Apollo Global Management

Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Apollo was an amazing place to begin my professional career. I learned more in 10 weeks about finance, and particularly debt investing than I learned in my classes until then. I was a member of the Credit and Real Estate Operations team, which helped with trade processing and portfolio management. I was matched with a great mentor who taught me the ins and outs of his field and I grew close with many of the other interns, even those in other buildings across NYC. Overall I have no complaints about the experience and I would definitely recommend it to others.

What I wish was different

Apollo is one of the largest alternative asset managers in the world, with investments across many asset classes. I would have loved to have had the opportunity to rotate through 2-3 sectors throughout the summer, and I think a rotational internship could be an interesting and eye-opening opportunity for sophomores in particular.

Advice

Go into the recruitment process with an open mind -- you never know what you might learn. It's very possible that your *dream* internship might not work out, and it's important to keep your options open and consider other opportunities. Also, apply for internships you might not be qualified for. PPD sent out an email last winter with an accounting position at Apollo, so even though I was a finance major I applied. Ultimately my resume caught the recruiter's eye, so the lesson is that you should apply to what you think you are qualified for and are interested in, even if you might check off all of the boxes on the job description.
