Applied Medical

Process Engineer

June - September 2023 • Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

What I liked

I liked the hands on opportunities and the exposure to many different engineering tasks.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given more time to be able to conduct testings and write reports for the device I designed.

Advice

Be vocal about what tasks you are interested in and ask your mentor to help when needed.

Mechanical Engineering Technician

June 2015 - September 2018 • Lake Forest, CA

What I liked

Ability to own design projects and gain outside perspectives. Made an impact and recieved technical and general mentorship from peers and managers.

What I wish was different

I wish my work was cemented in such a way that I was seen as someone with a career, rather than an originally-adolescent hire. Financially, i’ve helped the company with my inventions and projects more than i’ve received (versus regular hires), and formal recognition even in that of title would have helped. But as it was, I got to enjoy being an engineering technician who got to design things all day. I appreciate that very much.

Advice

Be concious about your energy and impact. Immaturity and maturity too.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Lake Forest, CA

What I liked

The experience was focused on learning new things for engineering and learning a lot about professional engineering. I also enjoyed the work environment. There was always pressure to do well, but never overwhelming and always positive.

What I wish was different

Very little actually. The short amount of time summer interns have is inconvenient because of the limited scope of jobs we could do in the short amount of time, but nothing beyond that.

Advice

Applied Medical was a great place to work with people motivated to achieve high goals both in the workplace and outside of it. It was truly a pleasure to work there.

What I liked

Great company culture. Very hands on and I was treated like a real engineer from the very first day

What I wish was different

There wasn’t a lot of natural light in the building that I was in so having better access to the outdoors during the day would have been nice.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions. Everyone there wants you to learn as much as you can. Participate in meetings and be vocal!

Extrusion Intern

May - August 2018 • Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed working on several design projects over the course of the summer. One in particular took the duration of the whole summer and required me to interview staff members, schedule design meetings, and use technical software such as SOLIDWORKS. At the end of the summer I was able to see the final assembly of my main design project and is currently in use by the production team . It was ver satisfying to see the final assembly of my project and it was a great pleasure getting to contribute to the team.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to interact with other departments. My department was one of the smaller ones which has its benefits in how many projects I got to engage in but I only worked directly with 1-2 interns over the summer.

Advice

This experience confirmed my desire to achieve my degree in ME. It is imperative to get experience working in the your desired field and the way to earn this experience is to attend career fairs, practice your mock interview with the career center, and send your resume to any employer you may have even the slightest interest in. All of the previous steps led to my amazing experience working for Applied Medical but it took applying to many opportunities before I finally heard back. Never get discouraged because the right opportunity could be right around the corner.
