Arconic Engines

Facilities Engineering Intern

May 2018 - August 2019 • Midway, GA

What I liked

The position was a lot of fun. Working on projects that had tangible results was very gratifying. My fellow employees were also a great encouragement.

What I wish was different

I wish I had moved closer. I commuted daily a little over an hour and it was very tiring.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions. The longer you wait to tell someone you don’t know what you’re doing, the dumber you look.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Dover, NJ

What I liked

The diversity and work culture of the factory was incredible. The people working at Arconic help each other out in order to reach target goals. When I received help on my projects, my supervisor and co-workers made sure I had the foundations to succeed.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a stronger concentration on Electrical Engineering troubleshooting. As an electrical engineer intern working in the maintenance department, it would have been helpful to learn more about the machines and the troubleshooting mindset into to maintain high production output.

Advice

Arconic is a wonderful place to work at, the engineers are there to help you become the best engineer when you finish your undergrad.

Information Technology Intern

May - August 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I was lucky to have a great HR rep, a great manager, and a great team to work with. The company is also really looking to expand into smart manufacturing, and there's a clear push from the top for more technology in the business that you can really feel on the ground. Interns also get to present their project to the AWTP lead team including the president of the business unit, which was a really great opportunity to learn, make a real impact, and connect with other parts of the business.

What I wish was different

At just 2.5 months, the internship was definitely shorter than most, and I do wish more people used the cafeteria at the AWTP headquarters - I wish there was a more social culture at Arconic in general. That said, both are minor quibbles.

Advice

As manufacturing companies look to modernize, they have real and rewarding opportunities for IT professionals available - don't dismiss them.

Environmental Health and Safety Intern

May - August 2018 • Niles, OH

What I liked

The team I worked with was amazing! Very patient and easy to work with, while we were in a professional setting I was still able to become friends with the people there. I also worked on a variety of tasks, which kept the work days new and exciting.

What I wish was different

Not much of the actual job itself, just the location. I was in an area that didn’t offer much in terms of after work activities so my nights were pretty boring all summer.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Even if you think they’re dumb or you’ve asked too many, you’re there to learn and your supervisors are usually more than happy to help.

Product Design Intern

May - August 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

The entire Intern program at Arconic was extremely welcoming and accommodating. The business was well integrated on cross-disciplinary collaboration and encouraged fresh ideas and perspectives in a team oriented environment.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had a bit more movement throughout the day, as I sat most of the day as a designer. (But this is typical for this job type.)

Advice

Make sure to take advantage of your resources and don't be afraid to ask questions and step out! The entire Arconic community is supportive and encourages all kinds of growth and learning opportunities to those who seek it.

Metallurgical Engineer Intern

May 2017 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed the assigned technical work and the opportunities to advance my skills and knowledge within the position.

What I wish was different

I have enjoyed all aspects of my internship experience at the company and wouldn't change anything.

Advice

I would advise any student in an industry internship to make the most of their experience by taking the initiative to seek out interesting projects as well as connecting with coworkers and management and spending time learning about different departments and roles in the company.

Digital Media Intern

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I really liked the people that I worked with. Their constructive criticism pushed me to work harder and increase me performance throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish that there would have been a little more ability to allow interns to suggest & implement their ideas. I feel that I was heard, but was never allowed to implement different ideas that could have improved Arconic's social media presence.

Advice

Make sure to collaborate with other departments! It is a great opportunity to get to know more people at the company and a way to improve your own department.

Engineering intern

June - August 2018 • Hampton, VA

What I liked

Very friendly environment. Provided exposure to a wide variety of cutting edge manufacturing equipment. Wasn't stuck at a desk all day, spent a couple hours a day out on the shop floor.

What I wish was different

Hours were fixed (7-4) and business was slow so I often had to go out of my way to find ways to be productive
