Software Engineer Intern

June - September 2019 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

I liked the company's work culture a lot. The environment was extremely friendly and welcoming. Everyone is accessible and glad to help with any kind of issue, be it asking for an opinion or asking for help. Interns tend to form their own social groups, hang out together, form friendships, and the best part is that none is left on the outside should they want to tag along. Interns are treated like any other full time employee that just started working, so the projects assigned to interns are real problems that need to be solved and that get integrated in the products. This provides a really nice feeling of accomplishment when projects merge with the base code. Also, everything that I learned during my internship is still quite valuable even outside the company (being consistent with a coding style, designing good code, learning on the go, etc.)

What I wish was different

I wish lunch would have been free at the company's cafeteria.

Advice

The learning curve is quite steep, so do not get discouraged even if after 3 months you feel like you barely started to get the hang out how everything works. So don't expect the beginning to be too easy, you'd have to learn their tools, the programming languages, the coding styles, development cycle, etc. Always ask your mentor for help if you need any or if anything seems out of place, if the mentor is not there, ask someone else on the team (or really, any team if your problem is not too specific).

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Nashua, NH

What I liked

Expectations were high and the tasks I was assigned were challenging. Very rewarding once I became comfortable with the tools and the workflow. Interactions with full-time colleagues were professional yet casual. The environment was very supportive of newcomers, and communication with others was highly encouraged.

What I wish was different

My C++ skills could've used some sharpening prior to the internship. Particularly with regards to object-oriented design concepts (abstraction, inheritance, etc). Also, having strategies readily available when it comes to reading and digesting unfamiliar, undocumented code would have been useful.

Advice

I was in the Platform team, so experiences will vary. Come prepared to be challenged and to feel like you're outside your comfort zone during the ramp-up. Collaborate and communicate: ask well-formed questions after doing due diligence. If you get blocked, reach out. Brush up on the software engineering topics you were hired to use prior to the start of your internship.
