Everyone was open and wanted to help me learn. I got to experience ArtPrize Project 1 from behind the scenes in terms of putting on the program and attending all of their events and meeting the artists. I also learned a lot from watching how the staff handled conflicts and how the different organizations (in Grand Rapids as a whole) interact.
What I wish was different
Mostly independent work. There were 4 interns total, but throughout the internship I only really talked to one. I also wish there was a central project I could take ownership of. In general it was a good internship, but I learned it didn't fit my career goals.
Go into it with a clear idea of what you want to get out of it, they want to support you, but you have to tell them what you want out of it. It also helps if you're really passionate about Grand Rapids, ArtPrize, or art in general.
