Associated Physical & Occupational Therapists (A.P.O.T)

Occupational Therapy Intern

January - May 2022 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

The internship with APOT begins with independent research to understand the profession of occupational therapy and how it is utilized in a school setting. This time of exploration is so beneficial for understanding concepts such as developmental milestones, school curriculum and IEP's. When you begin to enter the schools, it is very clear that every APOT employee is knowledgeable and passionate about the work they do with children. The therapists are more than willing to allow observation of their work and answer any questions you may have about treatments or the profession itself. The supervisors are also very approachable and accommodating, offering flexible schedules and effectively addressing any questions or concerns you may have. Overall, APOT has made me feel incredibly welcomed and I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who wishes to explore pediatric occupational therapy.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! The games and activities done with children are a lot of fun, but it is so important to ask questions such as "What skills is this activity addressing/developing?" to get the most out of this occupational therapy experience.
