Autism Support Specialist

May 2019 • Wilmington, NC

What I liked

I love being able to work with children and in a setting where I can apply developmental therapy and respite hours in the community with clients in a fun way

What I wish was different

I wish I had known that I can have as much control over what families I work with as they have in choosing me. I also wish I had known more about their salary being far less than Easter Seals.

Advice

Be positive and really committed to the families you work with. You also need to practice a lot of patience, especially if this is the first time you are working with individuals with autism.

Activity Director

What I liked

I liked gaining experience working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum. This past year, I had the opportunity to work as an intern at a school for adolescents on the spectrum. Working at camp gives me the opportunity to work with individuals in a recreational setting.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more time. The summer camp only runs for 10 weeks and I wish more than anything that it was longer. If it was longer, we would be able to provide more services to campers and their families. I also would have been able to spend more time doing a job that I love.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to be prepared for the extensive training. If you do not have a background working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum, the training and the work may seem a bit daunting at first, but it is more than worth it. This experience is absolutely life-changing.
