Behavior Intervention Therapist
February 2018 • San Diego, CA
What I liked
I enjoyed the free time from school to have the experience to work the social skills group sessions at the AST office. It was a pleasure being granted the opportunity to have a lead role in a pre-school like setting and structure for the children. It was fun and engaging while incorporation many social and peer skills that will aid these children in mastering goals for his or her future.
What I wish was different
Understandably, it is extremely difficult to take vacation or leave time from work because of the nature of the job. This position is very demanding as these children need intervention therapists typically every day so they can reach their goals and get their needs met on a rigid schedule. Otherwise, it makes it very difficult for the children to grasp and master the skills they need to function effectively with the learning, social, and behavior goals we have set individualized to each client.
Advice
I would recommend that this is a job for those who are interested in the mental health field as well as working with children. At first I knew this is something I could see myself doing during college, however, I was apprehensive about the work since there is 80 hours of training and exams to become a qualified board certified behavior technician. After spending time digesting the new work therapy procedures and learning more about Autism, I grew to love the extra studies and am a strong advocate for ABA therapy, as I've witnessed how effective it is 5 days a week in my job.
