Avid4 Adventure

Day Camp Instructor

May - August 2021 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Active work in the outdoors, and the opportunity to learn about rock climbing.

What I wish was different

Corporate structure felt oppressive. No one I interacted with on a daily basis had the power to make any real decisions. Also, the company was kinda cheap. Also, we had to mask in the outdoors, and that sucked.

Advice

If you want good working conditions, don't work for a summer camp.

Instructor

June - September 2021 • Portland, OR

What I liked

The staff culture was amazing, and I always felt included, welcomed, and heard. It was also incredible to be outside all day long, and I would have some moments where I stopped and was just in awe that I was getting paid to watch children grow and do outdoor activities. I felt supported, while also having room to try out my own ideas and make my own path.

Outdoor Educator

June - August 2020 • Mill Valley, CA

What I liked

I loved the location I was in and my work environment. It was a unique experience because of the pandemic but my employers were super helpful in making accommodations for my situation and helping me fulfill my duties as an educator.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had a car. As a result of the pandemic we brought camp to people's homes and transportation proved a big obstacle for me. Avid did provide me with a brand new bike which I rode to work everyday and that ended up being a really great experience.

Advice

I would say before making the decision to work with Avid make sure you are fully aware of all the new policies that may have changed because of the pandemic. I ended up having a great experience but many things changed while I was working and that was really difficult. I was also put in some difficult situations because of the pandemic so understanding what you are getting into is very important.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

Camp director team was incredibly responsive and did a lot to share advice, address concerns, and jump in to help with kids when needed. It was also a really high-energy team overall, so coming to work was actually fun.

What I wish was different

Would have liked more variety/say in age groups that I worked with. I was with 1st and 2nd graders almost the entire summer, so was feeling pretty burnt out by the end of it. It would have been nice to break that up with some weeks of working with older campers.

Advice

This is a camp that requires a lot of initiative on your part. If you have down time, you are expected to jump in with a game or activity to keep the campers engaged. You definitely need to be creative, but the experience gave me a lot more confidence in working with kids and as a leader in general.

Adventure Day Camp Instructor

June - August 2019 • Castle Rock, CO

What I liked

Avid4Adventure is a great company that really cares about its staff and campers. Everything was very professional, while much fun was had! It was an awesome experience working with kids and helping them develop their skills outdoors. It was also a very rewarding experience watching the campers grow and passing down knowledge to them. I definitely felt like I made a difference.

What I wish was different

The hiring process was a little upsetting and I feel like there was a lack of communication throughout. However, I had a chance to share my concerns with the Regional Manager at training and she did her best to help me and improve the situation.

Advice

Apply early! I felt like part of the problem I had with the application process was due to the lack of available positions at my desired location.
