The Bacaanda Foundation was formed seven years ago to assist indigenous communities as they seek to break the downward spiral of poverty. The Foundation initially provided mobile dental clinics but has since evolved to building rural schools. Our first major project was the construction of a training center for the development of rural teachers prior to their deployment to communities. Over the past two years we have built or are in the process of building schools and teacher living quarters in six communities. In addition to its main rural school program, the Foundation has programs in vocational training and community outreach.
The Board of Directors of the Foundation has three members. Susanne Jarnryd (Bates ’87) is the President of the US arm of the foundation. Erik Jarnryd (Bates ’87) is the Treasurer. Britt Jarnryd (Erik’s Mother), is the President of the Huatulco arm where she oversees daily activities. The Foundation employs a small staff that helps manage its programs and it enjoys the support of an extensive group of enthusiastic and energetic Mexican and foreign volunteers.
