IT Intern

June - August 2018 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I was able to talk to the CEO and many of the VPs who run not only the financial side of the bank but also the IT/technology part of the bank and ask them questions about how they got to their position, what choices they made or wished they made, and stuff about working in the bank. As an economics and computer science major, it was a really good experience to see where I could possibly fit with my very broad degrees since I didn't know anything about what I wanted to do as for a career. Everyone was very friendly and they gave me a lot of opportunities to explore different departments within the bank.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to work with the other IT interns (and 95% of the IT folks.) There were two locations: the finance-focus interns were placed in corporate and the IT-focused interns were placed in a different facility; I, an IT intern, was placed in corporate while the other IT interns were placed in the other facility. I was able to get along with the finance interns but it was more difficult to relate to them compared to the IT interns who I became friends with very, very easily.

Advice

Internships are what you make out of it. There will be times when you don't have anything to do since your manager is busy doing their work or there simply isn't work that you will be capable of doing. Reach out to your coworkers and ask if they need help, or even ask them about their life story (they'll appreciate the break you're giving them.) Interns have a VIP pass to almost everything and you should take advantage of it.
