Office of Institutional Research Intern

June - August 2018 • Lewiston, ME

What I liked

I liked that I could plan my hours and was able to work more consecutive hours than when I work during the school year since I did not have class. It allowed me to be a part of and work on a large project instead of doing smaller tasks. I am also able to see the benefits of the work I do as the data we collect and create is shown to the administrative staff who have the power to induce change depending on what the trends and numbers show.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more interaction with other students/workers/administrators as I was mostly helping my boss work on a large project for the administrative staff and update current Bates' records and data sets.

Advice

Working for an institution allows you to experience both a professional job as well as see the benefits of the work you do. For example, I am able to do important work for the college and see where the college is compared to others as well as understand more (demographically and statistically) about the college I attend. I think it's really important to experience purposeful work in addition to a regular job such as sales or in restaurants.

Summer Admissions Intern

May - August 2018 • Lewiston, ME

What I liked

I absolutely loved getting to meet prospective families and speak to them about my experience at Bates. It was a wonderful work environment that afforded me the opportunity to gain incredibly valuable preprofessional experience. I was able to enhance my marketing and networking skill set, improve my oral presentation skills, and learn to think creatively on the fly.

What I wish was different

n/a

Advice

Students should be prepared to speak to families from a host of backgrounds and experiences that may differ vastly from yours. Being cognizant of etiquette, professionalism, and specific vernacular is of paramount importance. It is a job that requires you to be "on" all the time.

Biology Research Assistant

May - July 2018 • Lewiston, ME

What I liked

Being able to practice applying biological concepts to actual research, whilst learning about newer concepts as well. Being a part of the planning process, as well as data collection, allowed me to better understand the logistics of carrying out research.

What I wish was different

Although I worked in a respiratory physiology lab, I'm actually a declared Neuro major at Bates. This work did allow me to study the neurological control of respiration to some extent, but in the future I'm enthusiastic about more neuro-based work.

Advice

Participating in research is a fantastic way to see if it's something that interests you or not. I originally had no interest in a career path that involved research, and my experiences in a lab have allowed me to see what aspects of research I do and do not enjoy, which is useful in planning out my career path.
